Something odd happened this morning. I was busy gardening when I heard the carbon monoxide detector alarm going off in the caravan. It is stored at home. I wondered what it was at first. When I went in the van the detector alarm was going full on.Now the funny thing is there was nothing on at all. No fire! No fridge! No heater! In fact the gas wasn't even turned on. Have I missed something here?!! Can Calor Gas in the bottle give off carbon monoxide fumes? I didn't think it could. What could it be? Has anybody any ideas? It is a new detector.
ive heard of this before on very hot days in new vans but not sure if it would happen in older vans or not
something about the fumes released from glue and plastics in the furniture and foam backed window blinds ect when they get very hot from the sun, was it a sunny morning where you live? remember even if it wasnt hot in your garden it could be very hot in your van if your curtains vwere open

Carbon monoxide is produced from incomplete combustion, so unless something is actually being burnt, it cannot be produced in the van. Like kaceyjosh suggested, sometimes when you leave the car running to demist windows and get the heater going the fumes from the exhaust are blowing straight at the caravan, in through the vents so set off the alarm.
It was a very sunny day on Sunday and quite warm. May be something to do with fumes in a new van. Still odd isn't it? Anyway rang SF Detection in Poole this morning and they couldn't understand it either. I have sent alarm back and they will check it and replace it.
No. There wasn't any car running near by and next door's gas fire outlet is way up high but is nearer the caravan than ours.It was quite windy on Sunday so I think any fumes outside would have been blown away and dispersed. Not taking any chances though. We have another detector which we use in the house. I am going to put that in the van tomorrow for the day and see if it happens again. The weather forecast is warm and sunny like it was on Sunday.
Thanks for your advice everyone. Greatly appreciated.

your right about how carbon monixide is produced
unfortunately just as steam and dust can give a false alarm in smoke detectors, certain fumes from chemicals can do the same in carbon monoxide detectors due to the way they work
anyway op you have done the right thing getting the comany to check it out and tbh if they are a decent company they should send you a new unit just incase

I had this experience when drycamping in the high desert, in the middle of nowhere.
Our battery was depleated after 2 days (it was the original battery, and at the time 3 years old.) In the middle of the night the co2 detector chirped & beeped scaring us awake. Thankfully, all was well and no gas leak. Next day we went 60 miles to the nearest big town with a local tyre shop and they graciously recharged our battery up for us.
I am hoping that your problem will be as easy to fix.

Hi could possibly be the caravans leisure battery overcharging this will produce gasses that the detector will pick up this is only if the van is plugged into the mains and turned on.
Hi, had this problem last year, whilst on holiday woke us up early one morning. moved alarm from caravan and it still went off. A new alarm solved problem.
Along similar lines my smoke detector keeps going off with the Truma fire on full blast although the (new) monoxide detector does not.
The caravan has not been used much and there is a definite hot metal smell but no visible smoke in the cabin or out of the chimney and the flame is a good colour.
Does the team think this is just the lack of use of the fire that will cure itself?
Couple of misunderstandings in these posts.
Bottled gas does not contain carbon monoxide (CO) - it's either propane or butane and will not set off a CO detector if it leaks.
The gases produced from a lead acid battery are hydrogen and oxygen, and neither will set off a CO detector.
Before I post my own story connected with a CO alarm going off - gases from a battery WILL set off an alarm.
