We want to ride this route later in the yearhttp://www.sussexcountry.co.uk/SportsLeisure/cycling.html
Has anyone done this and stayed in their caravan? if so which site did you use or can you recommend any?
We wont do all 11 miles but bits in between, also have a 7 year old so any parts without to many hills would help.
Thanks Jason
I live close to Cuckoo trail, so Know parts quite well. The site at Horam is about midway on trail and is located about 10 min walk from the trail. Toward the south end there are a couple of CL type sites (Hailsham)., one being Sharnfold Farm. There is also a ',commercial site at West Ham (about 2 miles from the trail).
As for the trail itself, its almost all virtually flat (its an old railway line), but as a walk I dont think its that interesting,
We always stay at the Peel Farm site - it's next door to a bike hire place which backs directly on to the Cuckoo trail. we'ver stayed at the Horam site too, but didn't like the fact that there is no on-site playground - you have to go to the nearby public playground, which isn't far - just by the site entrance, but too far for younger kids to go alone.
If you want to visit various places, how about staying at the Crowborough C&CC site. It's very well kept and good facilities on site and I think there's still a play area within the campsite but not totally sure on that. It's beside a big leisure complex where campers get a discount to use the facilities I believe, childrens play ground nearby (but you would need to accompany and stay with young children). It's only 20 mins drive to the Cuckoo Trail from this site.
Then there's Hartfield (Ashdown Forest and Winnie the Pooh Country), about 10 mins drive, where you can visit the Winnie the Pooh shop and 5 mins further on there's the walk down to Pooh Bridge. The walk is uphill back but manageable but I don't know what it's like at the bridge as I have'nt been there for quite a while. I think it's been taken over by Disney so goodness knows what's going on down there now. It's a shady walk so something cool to do on a hot day!
There's also the Bluebell Railway, if you're into steam trains, about 20 mins drive away and plenty of other things. You can also be in somewhere like Eastbourne or Brighton for the sea in about 40 mins too.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
