I see lots of sattelite finders on ebay but the prices vary from under a fiver to £30 or more can anyone share with me which ones they have purchased from ebay and which ones are satifactory. I would be obliged for info
the main problem is finding out which sattelitte you have found!!, the cheap needle style finders are great BUT you also need to buy a finder compass also so that you can identify which sattellite you are getting the signal from ,they are all really close together so without the compass its a nightmare... they sell compasses that fasten onto the LNB on ebay for about £15 delivered they have a sheet to alter the compass as depending on your location. dont be tempted buy the cheaper compasses they are useless!!!
You only need to know where East is as the Sky satellite is the first one when turning from East towards South. I have a simple compass and a simple needle type signal meter.
If you get the wrong satellite then when you look at the signal strength shown on your Sky services page it will not show the correct satellite (should read 0002 & 07d4)

Thats the way I understand it too!

Every time we go away, OH threatens to chuck our sattelite away, he takes ages getting the signal to lock on!! im sure there is a simple solution, but what!!
I had a nightmare last time we went away. I could not get a good signal, the picture kept breaking up! I spent ages on and off trying and blaming everything from distant trees to the neighbours car. In the end I gave up, brought the Sky box home and plugged it back in to my permanent dish only to find the box had gone defective.
I guess I did know how to do it after all.
Elaine, if you start at East and move the dish South then using a simple signal strength meter Sky is the first peak. just adjust the direction and vertical alignment until you get the strongest signal. The peak will be very well defined, if it isn't then the chances are that there is something in the way like a tree.

Works evry time for me too, start at east and move slowly toards south, watching the sky set up screen. Obtain lock on 0002 & 07d4 then VERY minor adjustments to getr max signal on thge bars. All done in 2 mins.
I've had hit & miss success in setting up satellite ... sometimes very quick & sometimes can take ages ... Even with a strong signal showng on sat finder ... Since going couple weeks ago & having a bit of a "mare" getting a "locked"picture i have read numerous pages across the net ... Piece of advice i will be trying is .. once strong signal found then to turn off the box for a minute so it can reset its internal meter & then turn back on can sometimes make the difference ... apparantly
Thanks for to all who replied. I was thinking of buying the one at Lidle's on Thursday if there is enough to go round. I trust this information is relevent to this outfit as well as the sky system ? Brian T
is there a similier device to find the best signal for freeview? i'm constantly trying to get a good picture, sometimes my freeview works (usually at night!) sometimes it dosent.
I have an analogue sat finder, rarely use it, just rely on compass bearing, 99% of the time I have no problem tuning in. Usually if I have a problem tuning in it is because the up and down angle is wrong. The dish should be almost vertical and in the highlands even appears to point slightly to the ground. Just get a compass and set the bearing at 150 degrees (this varies slightly as you move around the country but it is close enough) and move the dish slowly form side to side, no luck, shift the up and down angle a bit. It,s a bit like riding a bike, suddenly its dead easy and you wonder what all the fuss is about. The link is some info on the lidl system. If you buy the lidl system my advice is set it up at home. Just plug it in your sky dish, the default language is German and the satellite default is German. Switch default language to English and the satellite default to Astra 28 and hey presto it works. Then move BBC1 your area to channel 1, BBC 2 to channel 2 etc, all this takes 20 minutes, it retains the changes permanently and your ready to go.
