I know it's sensible to observe the various regulations that we have such as nose weight, axle weights, towing mirrors and so on and very often we have a few discussions on here about them but:

Has anyone actually been stopped to have their weights checked - or their mirrors - and what was the outcome?

Hi, The police can stop any vehicle if they believe it is unsafe. This includes caravans and they can take you to a weighbridge and check the load. If you are over the recommended weight you face a hefty fine and penalty points. As for towing mirrors I believe the law says that you must be able to see down each side of the towed vehicle from the drivers position but I have not heard of anyone who has been pulled over just for towing mirrors....it is common sense to use them I would say....

Yes

As I left the M5 at junction 27, I was pulled over by a police car on the island and he requested I follow him to a weighbridge. When we got there there were rows of caravans. It was Friday of the Spring Bank a couple of years back.

Checked car. (1 month old Galaxy) and caravan.

Then the weighbridge!

Only 250kg over the Max Weight

I thought I was careful, even at excess weight I was still only 74% and the police saw we were not carryng anything down the centre of the caravan.

The assumption was that there was a problem with the factory weight and I was advised to get it checked on my return and allowed to go on my way. Others were no so fortunate and were being made to take items out of van and put them into car. Others were not being allowed to continue their journey. And tickets issued.

This was a large operation with dozens of police and vehicles involved.

On return I emptied the van and took it to be weighed. The plated factory weight was correct,  so I was a quater ton over weight. And I struggled to keep within the weights for a weekend rally. No chance for a holiday of 1 week or more.

Now I always have my vans weighed, and up plated if possible, but this is not always possible.

My experience tells me that 80% of caravans will be over weight. So those of you who tow at 90% or 95% beware.

not a lot know that being overweight ,car or caravan also means the tyres are under extra pressure, this is the same as the tyre being under deflated in fact.this applies to car or caravan tyres.[:o)]

Nottingham and Lincolnshire police are keen on this and I would be very surprised if A52/A46 Bingham and or A17/A16 Sleaford weighbridges are NOT open for business this weekend.

Off from Nottingham to Somerset in an hour or two and my new 'caravan weight control' has arrived just in time this morning, gone and bought some batteries and can't wait to play.

I weigh a nice noseweight BTW  lol

Hi,  I weighed our caravan last year and was really surprised to be 100kg over. Since then I have been in touch with Lowdams, the importers, and when I take it in for its warranty check they will weigh it when empty. We are going away next week and before leaving I will go a weighbridge and have it checked out. They do two weighs for £8, so caravan and then caravan and car.

I have met only one or two people who have actually weighed their caravans and I agree with rushallmanor that most are overloaded.

Graham
