You're all convincing me that movers are the way to go, albeit a very expensive way to go. But on mentioning it to OH he wondered about the ease with which they can be pinched. He's heard that many are getting stolen. Any views, experiences?

I believe the movers have extended the the caravanning life of the older generation.

Millions of people all over the country will be groaning. The revenge of the wrinklies, bring it on!!!
Naughty, naughty, purplehat. Do I detect a note of bias?
Joking aside, it is the army of wrinklies (retired people) who have probably extended the open season for campsites. This has increased the profitability of the sites. Take away the wrinklies, and I think site fees would rise significantly, possibly depriving low income families from continuing to enjoy the freedom of camping.
And families who have to take their holidays in the high season (school hols) also make their contribution. If they stopped camping in high season, the low season fees would have to rise. Then some of the lower income retired people would be unable to afford to enjoy caravanning.
So an interactive situation exists where we all contribute to the common good for everyone.

I would have thought it would be a major job to remove the two motor untis from underneath the van, and then the thieves would have to get access inside to remove control panels, switches etc. I shouldn't think theft of a mover itself is very likely.
. Where do you keep your van Hitchhiker? mine is at Bentley at moment not in floods but near enough looking for somewhere a bit more safe incase of next time.

Removal of a mover unit is not a 5 minute job with at least 8 bolts to undo. Then, as NickW says, the main control unit would have to be taken from inside the van. In addition, the hand controlled would also be needed. Thieves would be unlikely to escape with every component of the assembly. From my experience, if you contact the mover manufacturer for spares, the serial number of the unit will be requested, which in turn brings up the name and address of the purchaser. It would not take many such instances for the manufacturer to become suspicious and refer events to the police.

Our new caravan has these on each wheel and reversing the van into the garage, a tight fit at the best of times, is now an absolute doddle.
Ours has both wheels movers linked with a cross acuation bar and so I can park it almost against a fence or a wall and still spring off/on both movers from either side.
I used to use a jockey wheel mover (which I must now remember to sell on) but the actual wheel movers are far better and easier to use.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
