have just heard of two caravans jackknifing  on the motorway and was wandering what made it happen?

this can be caused by a number of things. bad loading of the van, to much "nose weight", travelling to fast, cross winds, tyre blow out, miss matched unit ie van to heavy for the tow car, to name a few.

 all of these can be overcome by simple common sense.

Usually a consequence of a severe snake, which is in turn caused by the things mentioned above. Still better than rolling over though. While the risk of these things can be minimized by common sense, even the best driver can be caught out by freak conditions.

All of the above , But it's when the caravan loses it's 'grip' on the road and the movement energy  forces it to carry on pivoting on your towbar until it hits something solid, Usually the back of your vehicle
