We are looking at venturing into possibly buying our first caravan (we are committed tenters at the moment). We've seen an advert for an Award Globestar for £800 locally. They've taken the toilet out but it is apparently in good condition & the price includes a new awning. Any tips/suggestions or recommendations regarding this van?
Yes! Check for damp like with any caravan of that sort of age. I am sure somebody on here bought an old Awardstar in recent months that was riddled with damp. Sharpen the prongs and explore every nook and cranny, cupboard and under seat compartment and especially around windows and vents.
hi sue & steve check the roof seals the one across and the one long ways also check above the door nearly always get damp there on ABI awards other than that nice caravans and good luck
We have a 2001 Zafira and have been told that 85% of the kerb weight is 1197 and the manufacturers maximum braked towing weight is 1200.
I hope this is correct?
We are waiting to find out from the owners of the caravan, about the weight of it, to see if it would be safe for us to tow. They said that they currently use a small Mazda to tow with no problems?
Of course.... any further suggestions would be very much appreciated!
Sounds about right on the weights. You need to check your manual and most cars also have a plate under the bonnet with the weights on it.
Make sure you get the caravan's unladen weight (without belongings in it) and MTPLM (once fully loaded with gas bottles, clothes etc). It is the MTPLM that must not exceed the max tow weight and should ideally not exceed 85% of the kerbweight.
If you look at the top of the curtains you will see a plastic strip sewn onto the curtains, on thus strip are quite large popper type things that simply push into the rail. Just pull the strip by each popper and the curtain will come off.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Hi I missed this thread we had a 1990 Globestar absolutely loved it, the fittings were way ahead of their time. We replaced it last year when we fell in love with our current van. The Globestar served us well for 6 years.
I took all my curtains off and washed them, make sure you note which curtain came from where they are different for each window. We replaced the divider curtain altogether as it didn't give as much cover as I would have liked.
Oh the elegance of those glasses and the drinks cabinet.
Check the seals around the grab handles at the back ours hadn't got seal full on the back grab handles and let damp in so that we had to replace the back wall.
