We are thinking of having a heater fitted to a pop top caravan.  The options seem to be a heater which runs off gas, or a Propex heater which uses gas to produce the heat but needs 12v to run the fan and thermostat.  Does anyone have experience or comment on either/both please?

Sorry I have no experience with what you are asking, I just wanted to bump your post and welcome you to UKCS.  I am sure somebody will be along soon who has the answer for you..

Have you thought of an electric heater if you are using a EHU?

I have a propex heater in my Poptop. It was there when I bought it. But I still use a 850 watt oil heater when on hook up. For the cost involved in fitting a propex heater you have to ask yourself if you will get sufficient use out of it. Will you be doing lots of trips when its cold and can not use  electric hook up.

Having already got the propex I use it on short weekend trips. They are really light on gas usage.  Your choice!

Thanks for both replies.

We are thinking (ha ha) that we'd like to extend the season and feel that some heat would be a good idea.  Whether it works out like that remains to be seen but we'd like to give it a go.

Does the fan/thermostat part of the heater drain the leisure battery very much when you use your propex?  We have no idea.  We assume that you need the leisure battery clipped up for it to run.

I'm beginning to think that the standard gas heater with an oil filled rad  may be a better way to go.   (which poptop have you got?)

OOPS!   I should have read your profile before asking about your poptop.

THe propex heater only draws current when the thermostat needs it. The fan doesnt seem to draw too much current. My only complaint is that the fan is not as quiet as I would of liked it to be. Ive used it in winter on stand alone( No EHU) for 4 days and had no battery problems.

Regards
