I have just been reading an article in a caravan mag about someone who had problems with an insurance claim on their car as they hadn't put the towbar down as a modification to the car. To be honest, I had never gave this a thought as I thought modification mean't big wheels, 'go faster' side skirts etc etc. I rang my insurance company up and yes, towbars are classed as a modification. There was no extra cost. Thought I would share this with you as I may not be the only one who didn't realise.

Most Insurance Companies extend the Third Party Cover to caravans being towed - how can you do this without "modifying" the car with a towbar?

Sounds like that was a "Jobsworth"

Probably right but I would rather inform them even though its logic that you need a towbar to tow a caravan. There are some very awkward people out there !!!!

I mentioned it also to my insurance whilst remewing and they have now included it as a modification ,dont want to give them an excuse to not pay out in event of a claim.

Please be aware that you also have to notify them if you have alloy wheels.  We had all sorts of problems with our brokers because they wanted to know what size the wheels were, whether they were the same size as the original wheels or whether they were fitted as standard on our car.  It went on for months, literally, phoning back and forth for the sake of a few blessed wheels.

I'm with Budget as well now (I changed after the wheels fiasco - but not just for that) and I did check that I was covered for towing - so hopefully they realise I've got a tow bar!

Nora
