thought i had got a bargain from ebay buying a melamine set (16 piece) for £8 including the postage, advertised as not used, however it has bad stains in the cups, and slight cracking on the plates, i am so dissapointed as i have had many bargains for our new venture into caravanning, and i have already started a thread asking melamine verses pottery, alot of replies suggested this was a problem. Well you live and learn and dont you, Towsure here i come for a new set! with a mix of pottery mugs i think!!.

Try Asda or somewhere like that as they are selling off their bbq range at the moment so you may get a bargain, they do china mugs for 50p so doesn't matter if they get broken.
You should be able to get the stains out of the cups by dissolving a Steradent tablet in each one and leaving them for a while. As for the seller you got them from, I would contact them to say you're not happy and why, and ask for a refund, and if they're not willing then report them to ebay for "item not as described", also give them negative feedback. I know it's only £8 but that's not the point!

I have twice reported items to eBay as they were very definitely not as described. Both times the sellers would'nt respond but they did very quickly after I reported them and sent refunds! Also, both times I found eBay very helpful.
Don't let the seller get away with it.
As to melamine v crockery, crockery wins everytime with me. As clbewi says, plenty of shops sell it cheaply enough that if anything gets broken it's not a tragedy.
We got a gelert set for cheap (£7) at our local TK Maxx, they also had the picnic sets (full set of melamine crockery for four or six in an insulted type rucksack). May be worth a look.
As others have said, contact seller and if they don't respond open a dispute. And leave appropriate feedback for others, please!
As for mugs, I too don't like using the 'plastic' ones and use them for odd jobs like the wee ones paintbrushes, holding toothbrushes, holding cutlery that's just been washed, etc. We take half a dozen reasonably lightweight mugs for drinks, but use melamine plates to help keep the overall weight down.
I got a 16pc set at the NEC show for £7. Looks nice enough, but not used it yet. Supposedly dishwasher safe, but the last set I had suffered from water ingress.
Got ours from Bawtry, but when out at Torksey caravans last week noticed that they were selling a lot of their melamine off. I must admit only use the mugs for picnics use pottery ones in the caravan.
