Hi there I'm looking to purchase one of the above for my Compass Omega BPW chassis. Can I fit an Alko to my bpw chassis. Will only the Winterhoff fit? Which is best? Can they be fitted easy enough by myself?
Hi Ben , it looks like you can fit a Alko stabiliser see Here . I think that Winterhoff and Alko are both good , if i had to pick one i'd go for the Winterhoff due to the fact Alko recommend fitting a AKS2700 which is imo not as good as a Winterhoff . You should find them pretty easy to fit .
Are they better than a standard bar type? Which I have been running this season.
I would say yes , as they have pads on the sides and back / front inside the stabiliser head , this should provide more damping control , also it's just a case of hitch up and go rather than having to add the bar afterwards , when i had the bar type it jumped out of its cup a few times and dragged alone the ground .
I fitted an AKS1300 earlier this year and could not believe the difference it made over the bar type I used previously. I only bought it because I kept forgetting to put the blade type on, but the improvement was just mind blowing. The AKS1300 is the cheap baby brother of the Alko range with just 2 pads, so I can only expect superior performance from the 4 pad versions.
So is the hitch type stabiliser any better than a blade type?
We chose the winterhoff after a bit of research, because apparently the alko could be awkward to hitch if your car has a spare wheel carier on the back. Some thing to do with the handle clearance i think...and we had a trooper at the time.
I followed a Mondeo towing a similar size van to mine with a blade stabiliser,on the M4 in August, doing similar speed with similar size car. We were passed by a coach. I didn't even feel the coach passing me. The outfit in front of me was saying his prayers I can tell you. I thought he was going to roll over. With my AKS1300, there was no sign of anything untoward.
the previous owner of my van must have upgraded as the slide bar is still on the van. all I can say is that with the alko 1300 and being a newbie when an artic overtook me (was doing 50mph) the van hardly moved an inch. one thing keep your towball spotless
