hi, i am new to caravanning and i am going to buy a tow bar for my laguna, and am looking at one on ebay, its brand new but only single electrics,is this any good for me,thanks for any help, simon
The electrics are available separately. You will need twin electrics for a caravan, ideally, to run the fridge while on tow and to charge the leisure battery while on tow. The reversing light if you have one also uses twin electrics. That said, it is legal to tow with just single electrics as all the required road lights will work. The second socket can be added for about £20 using parts from towsure.
used only one socket for years with no problem but for the fridge.now have two and its better all round on tow.you will be glad you had the extra one fitted.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
The AlKo ATC uses the 12s too, I think.
The only real advantage is that the fridge is cold on arrival. The battery is not really an issue if you ensure it is charged before departure.
please check your cars circuitry before buying tow-bar and electrics.
could have all sorts of electronic warning systems fitted ( light out and sensors etc.)
might be better paying the money and having one fitted that is matched to your car with all electrics, witter and towsure acn supply and fit correct system for you,
yes most modern car use a fully electronic system to control lighting & sensors , you will here the term CBUS used , i think that renault use this system in all their cars,
i would highly recommend buying a dedicated wiring system when you buy the tow bar ! , also i would only buy from a reputable dealer like towequipe , fitting the towbar is striaght forward on most cars , but doing the electrics can be a complete nightmare ! , i fitted the towbar & electrics to my new VW passsat , 20 mins to remove the bumper & fit the towbar and the 4 hours to do the electrics !!! , i'm a electronics engineer and i still found it a challenge routing the cables to the specific control boxes.
i would also only fit a 13pin socket as opposed to twin 12n/12s the euro sockets are much better , especially if your caravan uses the 13pin plug if not then yuo will need a 13 to 12s/n adaptor
if you can afford it then have a dealer towbar fitted, if anything goes wrong then you only have them to blame.
