thanks for all the posts, lots more good advice - its particularly interesting to think about what children are looking for at different points in their life. We've already been through this with one lot of children - but there is no guarantee the next two will behave in the same way!
The economics of it are also interesting but we need to factor in that we are saving a lot of money on running a smaller car. The pitch we are looking at comes in at a modest £680 for the season or about £22 a week. An awning would be an additional £90. We can get a pitch with hook-up for around £11 a night, so if we are basing it purely on the site we need to average 2 nights a week. That could be difficult actually, particularly if we spend our two weeks main holiday elsewhere.
We would still have the issue of storing it over winter and the added complication that we would have to hire/borrow a towing vehicle or else pay someone else to move it for us.
Lots to think about - but certainly nothing to put me off.

Wow, it is upwards of £1500 a season for most sites down here in the South West so you have a bargain there.Ali
Im in the south west and pay £750 seasonal plus £160 winter storage on site .a really nice site too for the price . There are bargins to be found even in cornwall !!!
Our seasonal is in East Devon is £1375 per year, which includes electricity and winter storage
IF, and that is a big IF, you can get a pitch in South Devon, you will be lucky to pay less than £1500 and often in excess of £2,000. That's after waiting years for the privilege in most cases, we just struck lucky for once getting one without being on a list.

Do you need to take the awning down every week on a seasonal pitch?
If you are contemplating leaving an awning up upon a seasonal pitch best to put up a storm strap and ask a few neighbours by your caravan to check on your awning e.g secure loose pegs etc. I have seen quite a few awnings come down when owners are not there.

Do you suffer from an OCD. Obsessive Caravan Disorder.
we are a family of six plus two black labradors, when we go away we have to much stuff so we seasoned pitched our caravan we have been on the same site for the last two years and are going back next year,we leave our awning up all the time and have two bedroom extensions one on either end,my kids love it we go most weekends and all the school holidays it is worth every penny,we get there friday unzip awning and thats it home from home, the friends we have made are fantastic and the kids have really enjoyed it they hate winter when caravan is closed and can t wait to go back the following year
Thanks again folks. I've been away for a few days but you have kept the helpful information flowing.
I don't feel I could justify anywhere near £2000. I agree the price seems really good, but there are some downsides mostly as I have said before.
There is absolutely no winter storage, so it will have to be moved. Its quite an exposed site so there is no way I would risk leaving an awning up. I've had enough trouble with awnings on windy sites when I have been there to sort it out without leaving it for weeks.

we have been looking for a seasonal pitch for our van
somewhere around south wales but not had much luck as yet
i hope we can find somewhere for next season so we can get the use
out of our van, as this year its lived in storage apart for easter week end.
if any one knows of anything this way let us know we are getting desperate.
Hi Andy
I've been seasonal on a site near Narberth for 3 years, just about to go into our 4th year. Quiet site, just a park for the kids. Level, safe site, immaculately kept. My kids are 8 and 6 and I can let them out playing without worrying, they can't go out at home.
They've been doing a lot of restructuring, putting more statics in for the new season and hopefully the new shower block will be finished! They should definitely have room if you're interested. Only drawback, I noticed you have a couple of spaniels. Dogs have to be exercised off-site and we're on a bit of a busy road with not much pavement. New season is £1100 March-October half term. Electric extra (I think it was £2 a night this year). Winter storage £80.
Its called Wood Office Caravan Park in Cold Blow. 5 minutes further up the road from Folly Farm. 01834 860565
Oh, thought I'd better mention as well, you aren't allowed to leave awnings up. Most of us have those green storage boxes you can get in B&Q or Argos. Everything has to be disconnected and packed away, which is a minor pain, but I don't mind because at least I have peace of mind when its shut up that nothing can collapse or go missing. Also it keeps the site a lot tidier because the owner can cut the grass properly around the pitches.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
