I hope this isn't a silly question, I know the top goes through the awning rail but how do the sides attach to the caravan, they can't just hang - can they?

They do but they are pegged very close to the van and a panel is pegged to the inside of the awning

That's how all porch awnings go, as far as I know. The frame type ones have poles that go against the van with a foam cushion between them and the paintwork. The lightweight ones are just pegged so they are against it.

Have recently purchased a Romany 400 and took it to a tent repairers to have awning runners sewn onto the awning sides so that we have the option of fitting either end onto a awning rail in an attempt to stop the side from flapping and make it more secure. Have not been able to test it on site yet but i will report back with our findings.
