We have recently renewed our stabilizer [Snakemaster] and fitted the new plate to the towball. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the distance protruding through the bolts securing the tow ball and stabilizer plate must be 25mm [1"] minimum.

Is this correct? If it is we need to get new bolts.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Really don not see it makes any difference, provided the bolt is fully through the nut. When I had a snakemaster, I had about 3mm sticking through. That is goine now, but still only have about 10 - 12 mm, and that is using the bolts supplied with my tow bar and tow ball. 25mm before the nuts are fitted would make sense as I have yet to see an M18(?) nut that is more than 25mm thick

I understand. However we have only 4-5 threads showing. I was sure the issue was the safety aspect of the bolts if they should 'spin loose'.

Two threads left showing through is ideal but as long as the bolts fully through the nut beyond the slight taper on the end of the bolt it will suffice.

A standard M16 nut btw is 12mm deep

Thanks for the prompt replies. It seems we have it just about right. Mind now firmly at rest.

A assume you have the shakeproof / spring washers fitted? Or did they get thrown away to get the nuts on?
