Hi, usually there is a joint in the aluminium sheet behind the strip, try removing the rubber insert, and see if the strip is screwed to the van, if so it's just a case of removing the strip and replacing it with a new one, the mastic you see is probably to seal the joint,

Hi, it's not really a big job, and it's always worth checking the other strips for cracked mastic, i've got to remove my awning rail this year and reseal the joint,it's not leaking but we had some rough winds last year, and the awning took a battering.
