Hi

I have brought a caravan which did not come with any gas bottles or regulators.  It has a black pipe to attach a regulator too but I dont know which one I need.

I have two 4.5kg blue bottles of gas in my garage.  Would I need a blue or red regulator and should I change the black pipe?

The black pipe should have a date on it indicating when it was made and should be replaced every 5 years. If no date replace it now to be safe (they perrish and leak).

I think it was only in 2003/4 that caravans were fitted with universal bulkhead regulators. Sunds like your van is older than this and it is simply a case of attaching the gas system to the bottle. You describe having 4.5kg Butane bottles so you need a blue butane regulator to fit that. They screw on to the tap and the black pipe pushes onto the regulator and is secured with a jubilee clip.

Blue, (Butane), regulator for a blue bottle, and red, (propane), regulator for a red bottle. Do not mix them up.
If the "black pipe" is rubber, is should connect to a copper/brass pipe. Better to change the rubber pipe as you do not know how old it is. This is not an expensive job and any decent caravan supplies place should be able to advise you.
If in doubt; get the van serviced as this includes a full gas test.

thanks for your replies.

Van is booked in for a service at the end of next month.

I will buy new piping and a blue regulator to be on the safe side.

Many thanks

If the van is going in for a service they should change the pipe if its out of date as part of the service.

hi the black pipe is for butane and of low pressure and should be changed every 12 months, the red bottle has a orange pipe for higher pressure and last for 5 years as the date is on the pipe itself.for future costing change to red bottle propane and orange pipe and screw in regulator, then you can use the new light weight bottles.red is better for winter time too.see
