We're interested in changing our caravan for one with a fixed bed, but we're a bit worried about the length of these beds.
I'm 6ft 3 and did lay down in one the other day (Pageant Burgundy I think) and wasn't sure I would fit as my feet were dangling over the side (of the cut out corner) and I think I would have been touching one side with my head and the other with my feet at the other side of the bed.
Do any equally tall people have any experience of these?
I suspect that all fixed beds which run lengthwise would probably be too short for you.
However, there are vans with fixed beds across the rear and are therefore as long as the van is wide.
Moogler, we have the Pageant Burgundy and my oh is also 6'3" tall. He sleeps on the outside (Cut off side) without any problems as he lies with his legs slightly bent, as I think do most people in any bed!!
We have a fixed bed and my other half is 6ft 3 and doesn't have a problem. He may bend his legs slightly but he has never moaned about it so it can't be too bad!
We and had a fixed bed 'van and it was not the length of the bed that worried us. The OH and myself both have dodgy knees and we had dificulty in getting to the lockers over the far side and at the back of the bed. We had one outing in it and then changed it. Mind you if we had been 6'3" we might have reached the lockers.
We have a van with a transverse fixed bed and my OH is 6ft 3 and can stretch out quite comfortably in it (without bending his legs). Before we bought it tho we looked at loads of vans with conventional fixed beds and he wouldn't have fitted in them at all (not without a lot of whinging anyway).
Brian has a good point tho - there is a lot of kneeling on the bed to get at the overhead lockers
We have an Adria Adiva with a fixed bed,I`m 6'-5" and have no problems with the bed more with the headroom in the van.Just have to remember where the roof vents and lights are when standing up.
Thanks for your replies. We do fancy one of these fixed bed layouts and not having to make up the beds each night.
I was doing some investigation and looking at the spec of the new Coachman Pastiche 535/4 - apparently the rear fixed bed length on that is 6' 5". So that sounds good!
Also the maximum headroom is also 6' 5" which seems to be higher than most - bonus! That extra headroom would be great too.
Karen+Peter can you advise which vans have the 6'6" bed?
We have the Ace Award Nightstar and I have modified the rear dinette to be a fixed bed
We then purchased a standard double bed size foam mattress with memory foam top and thie length of this is a good 6 in shorter than the width of the caravan so that one of the backrest cushions will fit end on between the mattress and the caravan side
This gives a bed 4ft 6in by 7ft+ and is very comfortable
not being tall - but also having a "length problem" I would say allways allow for your pillows!! when we were looking at vans - I laid down on the rear bunk of my ranger - and thought great - abbi on the top - me at the bottom, no need to make up the front bed or use it as 2 singles I am 5ft 6"however once I added a pillow (after we bought it) and snuggled in - my legs were touching the end wardrobe. If only I could have that extra few inches !! so always now sleep at the front as it wakes me up if I sleep on my back - so take your pillows with you!
Specs on some UK models claim beds are 6'5" long but I think I'll need to try them out and make sure before we buy. Or as suggested go for a different layout or German van.
Might take my tape measure with me too to check how accurate the specs are to reality!
I'm 5ft 9" and I find the cut off corner side fine. As has already been said, I sleep with knees tucked anyway. I also find it OK as we sleep in a double sleeping bag.
We have a van with a transverse fixed bed (across the back), on the specs it says 6ft 4ins but there is more space to allow for raising the bed to get to the storage, and to tuck in the duvet down the edges, so actually there is about 6ft 6/8ins. It has the advantage of no corner reduction, and the full width can be used as you feel 'safe' that you will not roll out. Downside is that inner person has to climb over outer person to get out, but I suspect you would have to do that with the lengthwise version of fixed beds as well.
