I have searched the numerous threads on breakdown cover but can't see anything relevant, so sorry for this if you have heard enough about breakdown!
I am looking for breakdown cover that will cover myself and my husband regardless of which vehicle we are driving - as between us we have two cars, two motorbikes and of course a caravan. I think it would work out really expensive to take out individual policies on each vehicle, so a joint policy covering both drivers should be a better option? Also we are taking the caravan to France in June so need a European option on the cover.
We are not members of either of the clubs, and are not particularly keen on joining them either tbh. (No offence to fans of the clubs, just not our thing)
Anyone got any recommendations for breakdown cover on the individual rather than the vehicle?
Brittania Rescue do a policy upgrade to personal cover, giving two drivers cover in whatever they are driving. Also includes Caravan / Trailer Recovery.
Thanks Mark, I did take a look at Britannia before I posted the thread and I thought they only covered the vehicle. I will take another look, and give them a call if need be. I have read good things about Britannia on the other breakdown cover posts on this forum, so worth a try.
Green flag do a personal cover upgrade to their policy that covers you both in whatever vehicle you are out in. When my two sons were living at home we had two named cars ( theirs ) on the policy and personal cover for us which covered our two cars and anything else we were travelling in. They are an excellent company to deal with.
Have you looked at the Caravan Club's Mayday Rescue packages? These are provided by Green Flag and seem to cover every angle for significantly less than the AA or RAC.
Have a look at M&S insurance cover, we have just moved to these as it gives breakdown cover as part of the deal, it also covers you abroad, we will be in France in June also.
The cover we have is for two drivers plus 12 months cover for breakdown both Uk & foriegn for the twelve months.
It worked out cheaper than doing them individualy and the dreakdown is covered through the RAC.
I have been very dissappointed with the RAC and am now with Mayday. Very impressed with them and for an extra £20 you can get comprehensive cover for any vehicle. The membership card still shows the primary regestration number, but also clearly states comprehensive on it. You just have to remember to carry the card with you rather than leave it in the car.
We have had to call them out before now and there average callout time is about 20 minutes so far! Not sure if that is much better than the RAC and the like?
An example is that they can cover two cars and a caravan for a year for £129 (also includes motorbike cover if you have one of those too!) Or £76.50 for one car and caravan...full details are on their website.
Sorry, forgot to mention that this policy (Drive 24-7) covers the vehicle, but at least it covers both vehicles. We simply provided the two registration numbers and they log those onto their computer and it doesn't matter which driver drives which vehicle.
The £129 also covers you for european trips too (albeit to a maximum of 31 days in duration). You might need to check if you have more than one motorbike on this policy though, but it certainly looks better suited to your needs than some of the others.
We have the CC Green Flag policy. They were fantastic recently when we needed to call them out after our wheel fell off our new van.
However we were confused when we later recieved a bill from Green Flag for a further £60.00.
When I contacted them they said it was because we only get the first 30mins free when they are called out to asisst anything else you have to pay for. I was not aware of this and queried that if you are towing that I'm sure most callouts would last longer than the 30mins.
Green flag said that by going through CC that is all you are entilited too under their policyhowever if I had just gone direct to green flag you have a longer free callout time with that policy!!
(infact I must take this up with them, I'd forgotten about this when the accident took over.)
Thanks for the M&S suggestion, my insurance isn't due for renewal until the Autumn so timing will be tricky but it will be worth considering for next year.
Drive 24-7 is a new one on me, I certainly haven't looked at them before. So thanks for that suggestion.
My best quote so far is £140 for two cars, two motorbikes, two drivers, caravan and trip abroad - with Britannia. That sounds pretty good to me.
We were towed back from Dorset to Warwickshire last November, with the caravan, with Green Flag and had no problems. There cover is for me and my wife in any car that you are traveling in. Not just your own.
We have Green Flag personal cover - which is taken out by my partner's company for his Ford Mondeo, (including towing our caravan) but covers my Focus, and any other car which either of us might be a passenger in. We called them out the weekend before last when my son had an accident in his car (avoiding a cat), hit a kerb, and damaged his two front alloy wheels, two flat tyres, and had a chunk taken out of the sump! I was in the car at the time, and there was no problem in them coming out to the car. The car was taken to a garage of choice and is now back on the road (expensively!!!). In this area we receive a very good service from Green Flag, and always a quick response time.
I can totally recommend the Green Flag Mayday. Its not cheap but each time we have needed it - once for the caravan and twice for the car - they have sorted us out with no fuss. Me and oh are covered for both our cars and any other cars we happen to be a passenger in if it breaks down plus, of course, the caravan.
