Hi all,

We have just tried to make a booking on a CC site in October and have apparently 'invoked the tow off rule'. Can't find any mention of this in the rules can anyone explain what crime I have committed?

I seem to recall it can happen if you are visiting a site twice just about a month apart as it thinks you are there for more than 28 days?

Does that ring any bells with anybody?

I have tried to extend a two night stay by separately booking an additional two nights, as there doesn't appear to be a method of modifying an existing booking and I didn;t want to risk cancelling and then re-booking as a whole. As you say it looks like section 6 has been breached! It does say I can ring them and sort it out so all is not lost!

Its the 28 day max stay rule, a legal requirement for all touring sites.

Definately a legal requirement Caravan sites act 1968 etc.

Seasonal pitches "bypass" the 28 day rule, but cannot be occupied  for more than 28 days at a time.

I had this problem on several occaisionsand rang the CC to find out the reason and was told something similar to :-

 I am sure that you are aware that you may not stay at a site for more than 21 nights and it must be for recreational purposes only.

Some members were booking at some of the sites, especially near London, for the 21 day period, leaving for 1 night and then returning for a further 21 days, using the site as a base from which to travel to work thus saving a great deal of money on hotel fees or renting a property. When the tow off rule is applied then you can ring the CC to book a space and it is at the discretion of a supervisor whether or not you can book again.

I am sad and use one site for most of my breaks and have invoked this rule regularly but have no problem in explaining why I need to book again.

28 days applies to the likes of CL's and CS's as their run under an exemption certificate from DEFRA, this exempts sites from normal planning. Proper sites need normal planning and sometimes 28 days can still apply, it just depends on what planning was granted

Any caravan type club can get the certificate provided they meet the criteria, this then allows the club to run rallies in farmers fields and the like, I'm surprised UKCS haven't got one?

Possibly because the Exemption Certificates have conditions attached, like quiet times, which quite a few people seem to object to???
