Hi we were thinking about getting a sun canopy for France instead of taking the awning. Does anyone on here have one, if so what are your thoughts? I know the prices go from £120.00 to about £400 for the different makes. If anyone has any opinions on them we would be grateful to hear them.
The cheapest is just a sheet that threads thru your awning rail & is held at front by 3 poles & guy ropes. not good in the wind & requires constant ajusting in strong winds but easy to erect/take down. Others are more of a lightweight awning with a full set of poles but with an open front, some have sides, some dont but with this type you can still put an awning strap over so it can considered permanet for duration of your stay.
If your moving about every few days, I'd go for just the 3pole/sheet type but get a good one in tencate material rather than nylon.
------------- Sell my camper? I'd rather eat school semolina!
i bought a sun canopy for my first trip to spain a good investment i think, but if your strapped for cash just take the roof part of your awning i have seen a few vanners doing this.. Barry
If you put strong buggie cords on the guys it will stand very significant winds as these give and maintain the tension. If you don't then in wind things will slacken off and go wrong as slack develops. It only takes three minutes to put up and take down.
We have a FIAMMA Sun Canopy for sale if you'reinterested. It's a top-of-the range model and cost us £169.00 at the end of last season. We have since changed our caravan and thus want to sell it after just three times used. You can see it on my 'Gallery Images' at the end of last season when we went to try it out. We do have it advertised on here on 'Free Adds' at £100. They are much much easier than an awning and are always on the van and ready. The downside is that you can't store things in like you can with an awning. (I suppose you can't have anything....lol.)
Bought the one in the link, happy with it, if you buy one suggest you get extra tent guys, we use 8 in total, and lower the 2 end poles if it looks liks rain. We think they are good value for money.
we used to have the Dorema Solana canopy it threads on your awning rail and its got three simple poles and five lines to tie down to secure it,very easy but not good in windy weather of course :O)
