Can anyone please tell me if it is better to load the van and tow with an empty car or load the car and tow an empty van or doesn't it make a difference?

You have to have the correct nose weight when towing.heres a link for info on it.

I would load the car with heavy items first taking care not to exceed the max weight limit and put lighter bulky items in the caravan. The less weight in the caravan the better. If you need to put anything heavy in the caravan make sure it is over the axle to reduce the chance of snaking.

Spread the weight evenly between car and van.

Any heavy objects being transported in the caravan (such as awning) should be placed over the wheels.

Keep any weight down low in the van for towing.

Dont tow with stuff in the over head lockers or wardrobe, (especially when wardrobe is in an end washroom).

Don't carry water you don't need (I have heard of some people filling there aqua roll at home, imaging the weight in that).

When the caravan is on the back of the car both should be in a straight line. If not you haven't shared the weight out right.
