We're thing of visiting both Pembrokeshire and the North (Snowdon etc.) with the caravan. What would be the best towing route to take?
I have read that the west coast route is very...trying!....So which route would you think was sensible, or should I be satisfied with one or other. We'll be travelling from Cornwall.
WE went from north to south and back last year and the road is hilly and twisty, but the scenery makes up for it - better than endless motorways. Just take the route up the coast to aberystwyth and beyond. I would love to go to cornwall but the reputaion for traffic and congestion puts us off.

Also, the traffic congestion to and from Cornwall is muh less now as most of the A30 is dualed. Travel either early or late and you shouldn't have any problems.
Not the easiest of tows, in fact, quite tiring on the gear stick arm unless you've got an automatic. I did Swansea to Caernarfon by way of Aberystwyth and didn't spend much time in top gear. Give yourself plenty of time and don't try to rush. Roads are quite twisty so if you get a queue behind you try to pull over and let them by.
As for the A303, I used it for the first time in over 30 years earlier this year and was pleasantly surprised at the difference. It was an absolute pleasure after coming off the M3.................Mick
just towed from aber to wrexam using a crap van lots of gear changing but cant say my arm got tired, I dont think of the queue behind me I just think great im winning,never had hgv's pull over to let me pass
There`s no easy route. I know the area very well and you are as good to come inland from pembrokeshire through Llandovery then Llanwrtyd Wells, Rhayader, Mac and then Dolgellau. Lovely run through some awesome and often overlooked countryside and the roads are much better in Powys than almost anywhere else in the UK
I used to drive from Carmarthen to Anglesy every week. The road from Haverfordwest to Cardigan then on to Aberystwyth is the way to go. I would look to have an overnight at Borth. Then on to Snowdownia, beautiful area with loads to see. If you go to Porthmadog then make sure you go to Borth-y-gest as it is a little bit of heaven on earth.
I regularly go to Trelisk hospital from Magor and as long as you leave early then it is a clear run. Last bank holiday weekend I took the caravan down to Mevagissy. The family were bemused as to why I wanted to leave at 5.30 am. When we pulled on the site at 8.30 they were still asking why I wanted to go so early, then the traffic news came on and said the M5 was chaos.

Don't go through Aberystwyth itself, just as you enter Aber, turn right on the roundabout and go down through Llanbadarn and out on the A44, and about a mile out turn left on the roundabout and rejoin the main A487 at Bow Street. that way you avoid the center of Aberystwyth.
I don't mind the hills, its the narrowness that I have to take care of, especially through Aberaeron and the bit just before Machynlleth, where the A road becomes single track!. But the speed of traffic is mostly 40 mph anyway, as no-one can overtake the trucks. But to my mind if someone can drive a 40 tonner along there, then a caravan should be a doddle!
Take your time and appreciate the scenery, it is a twisty route (I caravan in Anglesey and have relatives in Cardigan so have done the route many times) just outside Aberystwyth there is an area where they have managed to get red kites to breed it is well worth a visit a bit off your route but if you are going south to North wales make the most of bits like that :)
