Is it true that when you buy a new caravan you dont have to return it to the dealer to get it serviced to keep your warranty dated.

Someone told me there has been a law past if you by a new car you dont have to take it to a specialist to get it serviced you can take it to any garrage as long as they use the reccomended parts as instructed by the maker.

Now i was wondering is this the case with caravans, ive emailed baileys and asked this question just waiting on a reply.

spelling not ma strong point but loving is.............

You're correct in saying that you don't have to have a car serviced by the dealer from which it was bought, nor do you have to have it serviced by a franchised dealer at all. As long as the car is maintained as per the service book, and proper manufacturer's parts are fitted as and when required, and the service book stamped, the warranty conditions will have been met.

With caravans, I suppose the same rules and laws apply, however, many dealers will only do warranty work on caravans supplied by themselves. Therefore, if you're thinking of buying a caravan from a dealer some distance away from your home, maybe because they're offering an exceptional deal, just remember that your local dealer for that franchise may not be willing to carry out warranty work as you didn't buy from them!! The same rules may be applied by your local dealer regarding servicing also.

The car service thing is by order of the European Union, ie its law. Uufortunately this does not apply to caravans.

This is the reply i got from bailey caravans.

Dear William

Thank you for your email regarding your Bailey Caravan

Bailey has a network of approved retailers and service centres across the UK.  We are happy for you to have servicing work carried out at any of these centres or any NCC approved workshop, however, any warranty work required will need to be carried out by a Bailey Agent.

Bailey Approved retailers, however, are under no obligation by Bailey to carry out work of another centre if they do not wish to as they are Independent companies and Bailey has no control over their business ethics.

A comprehensive list of retailers can be found on our website www.bailey-caravans.co.uk  or in your Service Handbook.

NCC Approved Workshops will be listed in the Telephone directory.

I trust this is of assistance

Kind Regards

Kelly Watts

So that meens i can save some cost on geting our van serviced............

I have a Bailey Senator Indiana- 2005.this has been serviced by a mobile service man twice now and warranty work has been done by Renishaw Caravan Services who do not sell caravans . They do service , repairs and warranty work. Bailey's letters use of the word "Agents" is ,I think misleading or ambiguous. These firms I  mentioned are in Bailey's service handbook but I would not normally regard them as Agents. The handbook calls them service centres but the letter refers to retailers and service centres at the start then later uses the word Agents.

What it boils down to is that Bailey have a service handbook with a list of firms who they have approved for service (to maintain warranty) and to carry out warranty work not all of which are Bailey dealers.
