I run a chain through mine and padlock it, a shame we have to do that these days but we do.

I was away this weekend, and 2 high spec proper mountain bikes (I think one was a stif) got nicked, the chain and cable that had them fastened to a tree were both cut.

Most markers pens clean off with meths/acetone/white spirits/thinners.
If I'd nicked it I wouldnt care if it melted with any of the solvents, if it didnt melt I'd have an immaculate clean item!!!
If you want to deface it engrave your details on a non critical area ie one that wont leak through weakening like the wheels.
Locking ups the best bet.-------------

We carry 2 thick steel cables and padlocks we can use if need be. Lock the Aquaroll to a front handle, the Wastemaster to the chassis. We take our pump/hose inside on a dodgy site when we are away from the van. Without it you have a problem, and it is small and easily nicked. We also carry a spare, just in case, also in case of a breakdown.
Last year we went on a long trip to Scandinavia, we had 2 complete pump/hose assemblies and one extra pump. We came home with one intact and working, and 2 which OH later managed to resurrect, sort of!
Pumps do not last forever, maybe about 3 years , so a good idea to have a spare.
