Hi we are picking up our caravan from storage on Saturday and towing with our new car for the first time. We have a new number plate but am wondering the best way to change the plates over. I know we need to get some sticky pads but should we take the old number plate off and if so will it cause any damage to the caravn if its stuck (not screwed) on? What have other people done and found to be the best way of dealing with this? Also we won't be able to clean the surface properly until we are home. Hubby had thought we would just stick new one over the old one but am a bit worried that should it come off we would then have the wrong reg .
I suppose that if it will stick to the caravan it will stick to the other number plate. I still think I would try and remove the old plate first. Otherwisw you are going to have to do it twice.
ours is stuck to the old one,use a top quality double sided tape.i used a tape from a car spares place.it is used to stick on trim to the side of the car.use three strips.a small roll cost £5 but the plate cost a lot more.be sure to fit carefully as once stuck it will not move.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I use cheese wire behind the old No plate to cut through it.

My husband took ours of and then but 3 strips of velcro on the van this way we velcro the number plate on so it isn't a problem swapping them over if we change our car. Good job as we have had 3 tow cars in last year and half.
remove the old one carefully with dental floss, clean and attach the new one, I often use a few dabs of silicone held in place with masking tape overnight.
I shouldnt worry too much. Do the best you can, with what youve got, to temporarily fit the plates. As long as is secure, and visible from the rear. You can get your unit home, and do a nice job.
If your new van has a rear window place the new number in there & cover the old plate with duct tape. the when you get home you'll have all the time in the world to clean away any old residue from the old plate. Placing the new plate inside isn't against the law, as long as you have it showing clearly it doesn't have to be with the number plate lights. I spoke to an MOT man a while ago about this same thing & he said if you have you plate on show, anywhere in the back & the plate lights work, they dont have to be together.

I spoke to an MOT man a while ago about this same thing & he said if you have you plate on show, anywhere in the back & the plate lights work, they don't have to be together. i did MOTS and made my own trailers many moons ago and he is wrong.the number plate must be in the correct position and the correct height and lit with a light or lights.the number plate light can not cannot light a plate in the back window.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I loaned my trailer to a friend, he used double sided tape to put his plate on top of mine.
The police stopped him as routine check and when they saw the new plate on the old one said that he could have stolen the trailer and detained him until they contacted me to verify it was on loan,
Unfotunately it tok the 3 hours to do this as i was at a hospital appointment
Friend wasnt too pleased but I was because it could have been someone else trying to steal the trailer

Thanks for all your replies. We got the caravan back home on saturday; we covered our old number plate and displayed our new one in the back window. If we had been stopped we could prove that we have only had the car for 2 weeks but it did look 'dodgy'! (after reading the above post (zziiggss)! We have now used picture wire and got the old number plate off. So thanks for everyone for your tips and advice.
