Just to let everyone know, that the fight goes on for our lost £500 that we put down on new caravan at the NEC show last month.
Have had a snotty reply from company saying we cannot have our money back!
Its amazing how these people change once they have your money, couldn't be more friendly at the show, now showing their true colours!
Also hope this stops anyone from making the same mistake, everyone I have told automatically says the same thing, we thought, you have a cooling off period, we canceled within days but apparently thats hard luck, anyway not giving up without a fight!!!
Mzzy that's awful!! Have you tried your local Consumer Advice place to ask what they say? It's an awful lot of money to lose. However, the company won't do themselves any favours - and in the end could actually end up losing business especially if you spread the word amongst fellow campers and caravanners who might be looking for a new Bailey.
We were heavily 'sat-upon' by the Adria salesman at the NEC, and we really liked the van, but I'm glad we weren't persuaded to 'just let him start the paperwork'........!
I know, I could kick myself, we walked away a couple of times too, he was so reassuring!
I wonder how many people this happens too, they are getting money for nothing, specially as I read caravans are selling like hot cakes！
Yes Trading standards are helping, but just feel letters are bit lame, sending the 2nd one now asking for a breakdown of his looses, dont think they can be 500 quid!
But a deposit is just that, a deposit. £500 is a lot to lose, but it is not the dealer who has broken the contract.
Not 100% sure but I think you'll find that the cooling off period does not apply if the sale is made at the premises, and by defenition at that time the NEC was the premises.
I agree with scarletsfan a deposit is just that and as you backed out of the deal and not them then you shouldn't expect your money back. Were you aware that the deposit was "non returnable"? - Although it was probably in the small print somewhere, which of course, you should have read before signing.
Yes probably was our fault but still going to try get some thing back.
We never went to the show with the thought of buying a new caravan, just got carried away I spose snd he offered us such a good price as a trade in, my OH thought it was too good to miss!
Once I had slept on it and added up all the other things we would need to buy - awning, hitch lock, insurance increase, bigger car to tow with (although we were intending on buying a bigger car anyway, I still wanted something economical, didn't want a BIG BIG car) Already booked our france trip/ferry, that too would increase as caravan would of been bigger and so on. Just wondered if it was worth it? Our little caravan is not exactly luxury but its paid for and easy to tow.
Oh Mzzy, never mind who's 'fault' it is, it's still £500 and that is a lot to loose!
I'm sorry the dealer isn't being a bit more customer friendly. It's a shame they dont see you as a possible future customer (after all you obviously liked the van) rather than being snotty with you. Even if they'd only offered to refund a small portion of the deposit, it would leave a better taste in your mouth.
If you don't want to name the dealer, which town are they from? I don't think they've encountered any losses through the cancellation of one order.
I'd write to Bailey, outline the attitude of the dealer & ask for their support in the matter. To be honest, the slesmans employer may not even know how he's treated you, have you asked to speak to the boss of the dealer concerned?
Anyone could find themselves in your position & considering the dealer couldn't deliver your new van for weeks after the order was taken, why would they say you've cost them money, it's rubbish & they know it.
