If it's a standard flanged ball then he's got to buy a new ball at some point, so best advice as said should be go and get one now.
However if the Alko head misses the bumper, the standard ball will do as long as it's totally grease free.
Biggest problem with a standard flanged ball is not left to right but 'up' when the head swings over and binds in the elbow under the ball, even so, theres plenty of room for normal towing but can bind in the bottom of a very steep dip in the road.
