Anyone tried this? Might take the caravan away on my own as hubby works a lot of weekends but don't have a mover fitted and I find hitching up is tricky by myself.
My Pageant Champagne came with one and IMO it's about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. It's hard work cranking the winch and the only time it could have been of use (the 'van was on a slope, so I couldn't release the handbrake and manhandle it) the effort needed to turn the handle was more than I could muster. It's much easier to reverse the car back approximately in line and then shove the drawbar sideways.
You don't need to break out the spinach IMO - you just need to figure out a way to reverse with reasonable accuracy.
There are several devices and tips around to help with this: Mirrors that give a view of the towball, marks in your rear window and on the caravan; sticks on the towball and hitch head; etc. Just search the 'net for "caravan hitching aid" and you'll get lots of ideas.
FWIW, I'm intrigued by the "Easy Hitch" mirror. It costs a lot less than an Easy-Pull and the idea seems sound. However, I've never seen one in the "flesh" let alone used one - so the usual caveats apply.
Personally, I've got so much solid metal at the back of my 4x4 that no damage is done if occasionally reverse too far. So I line up approximately, then reverse until I'm about a foot away, get out and visually gauge the distance, then reverse approximately that distance judged by the amount of ground that passes by my open driver's door. I then check again and move the car if required. I can usually hitch with no more than two or three "steps".
I've helped hubby hitch up (if you know what I mean :) ) just a bit nervous on my own but the mirror looks a good idea. Or I could just do the helpless female thing,,,,,,nah, it's not me!

i've towed on my own for the last 10 years used to share the driving but hubby doesn't come down until a few days into holiday now if you have trouble reversing onto pitch just let the site staff know most will help you in fact alot of sites i've been to do this as standard practice
