I've had this argument with my OH more than once.
When we got the caravan 12 months ago we towed it with a Townace and used the mirrors held on by straps and clips. Then we got the Granvia which is slightly longer and wider than the Townace and with larger mirrors - the mirors we got for the Townace wouldn't fit and without it costing an arm and a leg we couldn't find any that would, so as OH could see all the way down each side of the caravan we just towed without.
I've read many posts on this subject and am still not sure in our case whether we would be road legal or not, but that's his choice and if I mention it I get told I'm nagging! However, as of a week ago we are no longer together so the problem is no longer relevant to us anyway.
