Good to see that protecting your caravan is important
We lost our last van on 1-3-07 & we only had a hitch lock, wheelclamp (or so it was called) & rear leglocks. The van was found the same day, recovered to the dealer by me within a few days & returned to us after a week or so but we never liked it afterwards & sold it.
We've increased security to the following now & hope our new van remains where we put it.
I've sunk a big RSJ into the flower border & concreted it in, 37 inches deep in concrete & it has a hitch bolted to it with the nuts welded to the bolts.
I put the van in forwards using the mover & hitch it to the post. I remove the jockey wheel & clamp. I fit an Al-Ko wheel lock, hitcklock & two rear leglocks & a security post beind it. Plus, I park a car beside it & my L200 behind it. I have a spare steel wheel here & when the new van arrives I'm thinking of putting just the rim on the unlocked side stood on a length steel tube which I may weld to the bottom of the rim to simulate the tyre.
If they get it away with that lot on it, they'll do well.

Wow! That is what I call secure I like the wheels with steel bars welded to them, much better than wheel clamps
our little van has a hitchlock & 2 wheelclamps - it's in secure storage, so if it gets nicked from there, they have to pay up on their insurance (though why anyone would want to nick her is beyond me - there are far more newer 'vans to pick on with less devices than her!!)
When away, along with the above, we're thinking about indoctrinating the dog to caravanning - 45kg (7 stone) of snarling GSD should do the trick. Makes me chuckle actually - we've heard people pass the house & say 'that's where that nasty dog lives' - what they don't see his him lying here warming my feet or playing gently with my 11 month old daughter (but always supervised) or letting kiddies of friends pull him around - a real softy, just guarding his territory (which is worse now we have the baby!!) - ah well, worth every penny, though may be time to increase his workload for the same pay - god, if he were human, he'd have us at a tribunal!!!

I was going to buy a wheel clamp to go on the unlocked wheel Pete, having a couple of spare rims in my shed I decided to either sit a rim on a big steel tube or weld some steel to the base of the rim to form a foot. Stick a ouple of locking wheel nuts on it & it'll create a time consuming problem to any would be scum bag.
Having thought about it, I'll try the unwelded tube first so I don't commit a rim to a life as a security device in case I need to stick a tyre on it. As far as time taken is concerned, it'll only take me five minutes to fit the rim & it'll keep the standing load off the original wheel.
I don't doubt one or two will consider my security OTT but, having lost one van & had the upset it caused, I'd rather quietly lock down the caraan & feel happy I've done what I can.
As a footnote to this, I remind anyone chaning from a tyreless secure wheel to a road wheel prior to a journey to check the wheel nuts part way into their trip. I carry a small torque wrench with me should I suffer a puncture & need to change a wheel on a trip so this presents no problem.
I also use something which is probably more in the line of recovery than prevention. (My TT is also secured using familiar methods). I have a mobile phone left in my TT running off a small M/C battery through a car charger. It would be easy to "hide" this in a Caravan and it stays charged up for ages).
This is registered with http://www.followus.co.uk/index.html It's a pay as you go mobile phone tracking service (For keeping track of your kids etc). Limited coverage in some areas but still a viable option. Worth a look as most of us probably have old mobiles knocking around which we don't use any more. I've tried it and if nothing else it gives you an area to Stake out.
If they want it they'll get it. Did anyone see the caravan channel this week? They showed cctv footage of a van being stolen. As well as the CCTV, they had a post in the ground, wheel clamps, hitchlocks and god knows what other devices. It took less than 10 minutes from arriving to leaving towing the van behind them
I was going to post that!!LOL. Yeah make sure you are well insured we have wheel clamp, leg locks,hitchlock and a motorbike chain. But we know if someone wants it they will get it.

I get the missus to sleep in it. When she starts on at them like she does me,they'll take pity on me, bring the van back,pay for any damage then turn themselves in and opt for a quieter life behind bars.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
