Evening :]

I am seriously considering a 5th Wheel unit, the one I have my eye on is 27ft in length.  Has anyone got a 5th wheel or a caravan of this length.  If so have you had any problems with sites not allowing you on?  This is our only worry right now.  We love the Forest Holidays site at Pickering and would hate to be restricted from this kind of site.

firstly the over all weight of a 5th wheeler and pick up could exceed your allowed weight  so do you have a hgv licence secondly  is your pick up fit for the job as ther is only a couple of pick ups fit for the job even then they need the suspension up graded and the engine  for pulling the extra weight and thirdly if you did break down how will you get it home the RAC and the AA dont accomodate for 5th wheelers but most important is is it a legel one because most of the american imports are totaly ilegal i have done a lot of home work in to these and weighed up the pros and cons and i ended up just bying a new van it is 26 feet long and a lot of places either dont let me in or charge me two pitches

There is the 5th wheel company in britain and kountrylite import ones legal on our roads.  The caravan club rescue will accomodate large motorhomes and so probably 5th wheelers.  You might be better off posting in motorhome section as that is where 5th wheelers often go.

Hi, Thank you Brian and Khanny

the 5th wheel i've been looking at it a British version a 'lite' 5th wheel.  A lot shorter and lighter than the US versions and a Hilux etc can tow them legally as can anyone with a post '97 driving licence.

My real only worry is the restrictions on site.  I'll try posting on the motorhome page too.  Thank you :]

I have seen HUGE ones at Bainlands in Woodhall spa and at Ferry Meadows we camped next to one.

I have seen a British 5th wheeler on the C&CC site at Winchcombe so I guess other club sites will take them too.

Hi, I was at the motorhome show at Stratford racecourse 3 weeks ago, where there was a celtic rambler 5th wheeler on display. This is built in North Wales to a very high standard and is UK road legal. They do another model also and they had an open day at the factory last week. I dont have problems on sites with my 8 metre caravan ,so see no reason why these should be. If I buy a fifth wheeler , it will be one of these.

There were2 of the British built ones at La Bien assise last week, but in France you would have had difficulty getting into some of the sites we used. Our 18 at Bailey is tight on some pitches!

Hi

Also consider how you fill the water tank and empty the waste. This was a problem we observed on a site recently.

Hi,

Have done some work for 5th wheeler owners and from what I have heard there is a limit as to how many trailers a site can have without requiring a different operating licence, as once they have more than so many they can become classed as trailer parks. I guess that some of the smaller sites might just turn a blind eye to it but I wouldn't like to rely on it.

Fresh and grey water arrangements are similar to most motorhomes. Since the tanks are a lot bigger than an Aquaroll and Wastemaster, you can go several days between visits to the motorhome service point.

The way you handle the toilet waste depends on whether you've got a European-style cassette or a US-style black water tank. If you have a cassette, you dispose of the toilet holding tank in the same way as you would with any other Thetford-equipped caravan.

US-style black water tanks are more of a problem. If you can get close enough, you can run a sewer hose to the CDP and dump the tank like the Americans do. Alternatively, you can use a "blue boy" (similar to a Wastemaster only bigger) to transport the sewage to the CDP. Even better, you can fit a macerator that shreds the sewage and can pump it uphill to the CDP. Not that I condone this, but I have heard of people pumping macerator discharge into the site waste water point (but only where the site has mains sewers).

HTH,

Geoff

A problem I see is that whilst they are more manoeuvrable than a coupled caravan they cant be positioned without the "tow vehicle". So you need the space to manoeuvre; back to the difficulties of pre-mover days, such as limited choice of pitching and asking the person opposite to kindly move his car so you can get in or out.
Otherwise there are really nice units from the 5th wheel Company
