I will be going to scarborough (Lebberston) in a couple of weeks so I thought now would be a good time to check my route from Livingston (near Edinburgh). I normally use the AA route planner but I also looked on this forum for different/more caravan friendly route planners and saw the Michelin one recommended. Anyway.. they both tell me to go different routes from the A1(M) to scarborough
The AA tells me to go via Thirsk (A170) and the Michelin tells me to go via York (A59/A64). As I have never been to that part of the UK before I was looking for advise as to which would be the best option with the van and this only being my 4th time out.
Many thanks in advance for you help folks!!

If you are not confident towing I would take the A64 york route. The steep hill is Lythe bank, about 10% gradient, and goes through Sandsend, the road then does a U-turn going inland about 100 meters, over a small bridge with a tight turn and back to the coast. It is do-able but if you are not confident towing yet it may be a bit of a trial, especially if it is busy as there are usually cars parked all down one side of the road.I suggest while you are down here, check it out for your way back, I recommend a visit to runswick bay, about 10 miles North of whitby, while you are there, possibly the jewel of yorkshire's coastline.
Best of luck,
Paul.
You have given me so food for thought. I think I can definately rule out the Thirsk road as I this is only my 4th time out. I am fairly confident with towing but I alway like to avoid trouble if possible.
Cheers
Richard

Paul - The hill on A171 is Birk Brow and is 1:7. Lythe Bank is on the costal A174 and is 1:4, with several other gradients varying from 1:10 to 1:7 along that route. At least on A171 there is just this single very steep bit, which coastbound is uphill and dual carriageway for most of it. There's also a reasonable run up to it as well.
