Sorry this is long winded and I am sure I have read something on a post on here before but I can't find it!
We have Trio awning - we think an 850, and the current caravan apparently needs over 1000, so its too much to have extended. Have spent a couple of years with out using an awning we are missing it, so we did start to look at the light weight like Quest but that had to go back it was so faulty!
So to plan c! - Use existing the awning as very large porch so we alter one side to have a leg pole and padding. Two companies have quoted for this at about £150. I spoke to another today who said they don't do it and it is a DIY job - it involves cutting the beading in the right place for the canvas to drop down.
One caravan sales place have the conversion kit £85 but they are a long way from us and would charge £10 delivery. Have spent a good bit of the day trying to find somewhere nearer that can supply one or the bits.
I'm sure I have read a post where someone did it with a leg pole and bracket and foam round the pole for a fraction of the cost, but can't find it.
ok i would say you can do this yourself with a bit of time and a little effort
you need some pipe foam, the sort that goes around your pipes at home and some pvc material, do like they said and cut the sides of the piping in the right place and then make a cover for the pip lagging un pick the awning beading and sew in place, i would suggest you only do this to the side that is going to be loose as you can use the other bit to go thr the channel as normal, depending on where your door way is postioned on the van, you then need a replacement pole for the leg a clip from the hard ware shop for holding the pipe to a wall will do to hold the leg in postion, shouldnt cost any more than £10 in total that way.
Hi
1) You cut the awning bead at the at the height of the caravan
2) you visit your local dealer and buy a length of figure of 8 moulding a side pad and a vertical pole
3) Erect the awning and fix the pad onto the awning side wall with the cut using the figure of 8 moulding.
Some friends of ours have done it a different way. They have put a new awning rail on the caravan the length of the awning from one end and then brought it down the middle of the caravan. No alteration of the awning is needed and the new awning rail is not very noticeable. The awning fits like a glove.
We've just converted our NR awning. It's a 13' awning and we've converted it to fit our new 21' van. We bought the conversion kit from NR (£79 incl delivery), which includes everything you need, and it took us about an hour to do. It was dead easy and you can't tell it's been converted, it just looks like a very big porch awning.
The only thing to be careful of is where the awning actually drops, and whether it covers any vents or windows on the side of the van. We can't open the kitchen window, but that's not a problem, but be careful it doesn't restrict any fridge vents etc
