I have been carrying 2 adults mountain bikes on the roof of the car and I am now going to put the 2 kids bikes on the roof so I don't have to put them in the caravan. I was wondering how people position them on. Do you have 2 bikes facing forwards and 2 facing backwards because of the handle bars?
Interested in hearing any ideas from fellow cyclists.
I think it all depends on how wide your bars and cycle carriers are. I've had 2 adult and 2 child bikes on before, all facing forwards. As the bars are all different heights, they haven't caused any difficulty.
You need to check the weights. 4 bikes could take you beyond the limits of the roof bars, normally about 50kg I think. I would be quite surprised if 4 bikes add up to less than that.
It's not just the roofbars. Each car has a weight limit for items carried on the roof - check your handbook, and don't forget to include the weight of the roofbars or roofrack, and any other fixings you use.

We have had 4 adult size bikes on the roof bars, within the weight limits, and yes we put 2 facing one way and 2 the other due to the handlebars. One they were all on we also ratchet strapped them together as extra security. Travelled over 700 miles s without any problems.
