or do you just go for it and hope for the best.

site pre booked ,Route planned (don't relie on sat nav) van pre packed .tyres checked. wheel nuts tightend, nose weight checked. car fueled, fluid levels ,tyre pressures checked.
Don't ever leave anything to chance = a less stressful trip .approx 20000 miles towing in the last 4 years.

Always book sites in advance, OH does all the things to do with the car. That said, we are off to France in September, have the camping/touring/soleil cheques and have been told by everyone on here who goes over out of season that there is no need to pre book.

Always book sites in advance. This website is marvellous for that. You can check the reviews and get a much better idea of what they are really like. Also look on Google maps satellite view.

Plan the route and enter it into the sat nav. I set way points to make it take the correct route and plan it on limited speed of 55mph. I find it easier to drive knowing exactly what's coming up.

Pack and load everything carefully, check the car etc and away.

Agree with Navver, except with regard to Europe, where it's not always necessary to book.  After saying that I would always book in the main holiday/ seaside areas.  If going  to Europe out of 'our' main holiday season, check to make sure the site is open.  In Europe the caravan/camoing 'season' is generally shorter than in the U.K. and some sites shut for longer periods.

If we am touring in England, we book all our sites in advance.

If we am touring in Scotland, we only book the first night. The rest we find out about the areas we will be passing through and gather as much information as we can about all the sites in that area.

We also spend a great deal of time looking at Google Earth for likely wild camping sites.

We have a small caravan and it is equipped for wild or site camping.

If we are on site we can leave the van and tour about, but if we are wildcamping, then the car remains locked onto the van.

For us, a touring caravan holiday is all about "freedom to roam". We are truly Recreational Nomads. Pre-booking sites is too restrictive. It means having to be at a certain place by a certain day and who knows what they are going to see and want to see more of, along the way. Our countries are full of absolute gems of places that we come upon by accident and want to stay a while and explore.

But then again, caravans are versatile units and can be used by different folks in different ways.

It makes travelling more enjoyable and relaxed with prior planning. I don't have a sat nav either so route planning is done manually and written down.
