Hi, can you tell me that although the proper way is to do a re-seal on our caravan window - would a (good ) sealant not also do the job sealed around the outside?

Thanks for any help

when you buy a new window seal there is a small amount of mastic type sealent that sticks to the outer wall, so if you cant afford to replace the seal, and it is not holed or split you could just put some sealent under the outer rubber seal to stop water getting in.

Thanks for replying so quickly I was hoping it would be okay to try this first- and by doing so not make things worse (in case the sealant would be incompatible with mastic -or whatever)..

Thanks again

See here http://www.1carpc.co.uk/wcdr/window-reseal-2.htm .

You could try running a bead of tube mastic under the seal, but if water has been getting in you should remove the seal and check the frame hasn't rotted , you can then also dry the frame out if its ok . Do not use silicone sealant for caravan resealing , use either sikaflex 512 caravan mastic or Tigerseal link . Always make sure you clean off white spirit with meths ( see window reseal link above ) .

Thanks Wizard for the info but we decided to be brave and reseal the window.

We followed your suggested link to Alan Parkers website, i dont think we would have attempted it without it. We had trouble buying the mastic though. We went to the caravan place in Carnforth but they didn't sell mastic or the new seals. We managed to buy mastic in Blackburn at Reads and reused the old seals.

Alan doesn't say why he used 25mm mastic because they sell it in various widths. Our wood measurement was 30mm but had to buy 32mm. We only had a choice of 19mm, 32mm or 45mm. However we felt pleased that we managed the job and it hasn't rained till now! we will go up (to where the caravan is sited) next week and fingers crossed it has worked!!  As this window has needed resealing does it stand to reason that they will all need doing?
