I have the above lock with the plastic ball thing in too, but after a bit trawl of the net it seems they are quite easy for scum to remove by damaging the casting.

I am therefore looking to change it (I am paranoid I have 4 wheel clamping devices on!) to maybe the Saracen hitch lock or similar.

What do you guys use and why ?

Has anyone had a theft with the above Alko 3004 hitch lock on ?

Thanks

I have not had any trouble with the Alko - I do use other security measures with it. I think any security can be defeated by a determined theif but they are a deterrant - the potential perp is probably going to go to the next one without a lock.

We havent had any problems with our Alko lock either. As above, do use it with other security measures.

The short answer is 'Yes!'  We had a van stolen May last year and it had the Alko fitted.  The 'but' is that I think that they would have taken the van in any case, irrespective of the security.  I think most security devices can be overcome - the issue is how long it takes them to ovecome it.  Our van was kept in a secure storeage site but it was fairly isolated.  It had secure locked gates and security stumps in the ground, which they sheered off with an angle grinder.  We keep our new van in a more secure site with someone living on the site for security.  When they took our van, they took others too - and all manner of mangled security devices were left behind.

I can't remember where I heard this (it might even have been a T.V. comedy sketch) but..............

The caravan sales team arrive at work the one morning only to find that a van had been taken.  They were astonished because the van was blocked in all around by other vans that has obviously not been moved.  They mentioned it to the workers on a building site next door who replied, 'Funny, our large crane was stolen too!'

If they want it, they'll take it.  Yoo much security could result in damage to the van if they try and have to leave it behind.

The best security devicews I have seen are the Alko wheel locks, but no doubt the thieves will find a way of overcoming these in time - if they have not done so already.

I think it depends what they are after.  Some vans are actually stolen to order.  One of the vans that went at the same time as ours was the most secure van at the storeage site.  You somrtimes can't win with thease people - wihch, of course, doesn't mean we have to stop trying.  Let's make their life bl**dy difficult.  (sorry!)

do not think you can have too many locks,it takes me 15 minutes to unlock the van and it is at home, two wheel clamps.two strong chains bolted to the wall at the rear and going through the back legs.hitch lock same as yours, strong chain over the chassis at the front going through a ground anchor.alarm with tilt sensor.all this is designed to slow the baddies down thereby giving more chance of them being caught.as said the sophistication of the cutting gear they have now makes short work of any lock.only heard of one case where the new wheel lock by alko being cut by a gas cutter.

All you need is a good strong electricity supply bolted to the chassis; wheels insulate it from the ground. Just need to warn the postman, the kids etc.
