Hiya everyone,
we ordered our new caravan at the October show. We were told it would be available early feb so we are awaiting the call!!
I got a couple of questions though please....
If they said early feb should they have already given me a definate delivery date?? I called them 3 weeks ago regarding something else and was told it was due "any day now" and to expect a call. I still haven't heard anything so rang today and was told it was due anytime now and the salesman would ring me back but he didn't! Well I'm not too bothered as they did say early feb and I can't go away in it just yet even if it came now due to work commitments but just getting itchy feet!!! So I'm not sure if they'll just ring and say your caravans here or if they're going to ring with a delivery date.
The other question is something that is bothering me..... How will I know if it's brand new??? The reason I ask is the dealer has some display models in and my OH said ( jokingly!) I hope they don't try to give us one of them.... Well it's got me worried now, so would a brand new one come with some wrapping on stuff. Like seats or the toilet etc, you know what I mean?? So we know it really is brand new. Would the window markings state it's 2010 ????
I'm a born natterer as it is so this is just adding to it.
Hi grumblflick, claire you did'nt say what make, I visited local showroom to-day and they were taking a delivery of a batch of bailey caravans the pegasus, so it looks as if the manufactures are starting to deliver thier stock of new vans, your van could have been sitting in the manufacturers stock yard, waiting rest of a batch to be finnished and fill the transporter for your area. the van should have protective covering on upholstery, the protective covering in the toilet, I think would be removed by the dealer when prepering your van for collection, transit dust and dirt, then washed cleaned and pollished, and smell new, hope your dealer's costomer care improves, there will be others along with more experience in new vans, and they will be able to give you a better idea of what you shoul have in new van. hope you enjoy it soon.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
we have just (3 weeks ago) picked up our new van and the easiest way to see if its brand spanking new is to look at the gas and electric test certs that come with them they should obviously be dated somewhere near the date you pick the van up, ours was dated 17/12 and we picked it up 12/01 so with xmas in the middle thats good enough for me our van was brand new.
The plastic etc may or may not be removed by the dealer so that is no indication, but the smell is a giveaway, it will smell new if it is new and that new smell soon goes once it is opened every day on a dealer forecourt.

You should get a Touring Caravan Registration Document under the CRISS scheme which should indicate that there were no previous owners. Make sure you ask for it or that the dealer agrees to register your Van and then CRISS send you the document. Click here to find a nice little note on this site about the scheme
Truth is, in this recession, many manufacturers have been building to order rather than building to have a stock available for the buyer who comes in through the door. Because of the sudden upsurge in orders, especially since the October NEC show, manufacturing takes longer. No doubt your dealer had a date from the manufactuer only to be put back. He will be spinning plates trying to keep everyone happy.
Just a thought, If you ordered in October and paid a deposit and were handed a Full VAT invoice stipulating delivery within six months of that order you may only be liable to VAT at 15% on the balance. HMRC guidance indicates if the dealer raises a full VAT invoice before the end of the year and pays the VAT due at their next return then you can save 2.5% on the cost by not paying VAT at 17.5 % on that balance. If you expect to pay VAT at 17.5% on the balance and you have the right sort of invoice it might be worth a question to the dealer. You never know you may save a few bob. It comes down to how dealers deal with their VAT payments. Could by £400 on a £16,000 balance so that pays for your essential bits and pieces of equipment and a pint for me for the advice
I wonder if this may have been missed by many folks/dealers ordering at the NEC.

Thanks everyone or your replies. Its a bailey ranger GT60 that i've ordered. I wasn't doubting it wouldn't have a previous CHRIS registered owner if it was being used as a demo model, so are demo models registered as the dealer being the first owner?
I know they are really busy because of the show so i don't want to pester them as we're not needeing it now i just would have liked a date. I've seen someone else on here already has a delivery date of 28th Feb which is quite a while away.
Phil, I've already wondered about the VAT i'm going to dig my paperwork out but i'm sure they said because my delivery date would be after the VAT increase we would have to pay 17.5%. I'll look into it though.
Phil, i wish i'd have known about having a full VAT invoice before now as i'd have pushed to get get one as i don't think the paperwork i've got is a full invoice, i think its just an order confirmation. I'm going to check when I get home from work.
"but i'm sure they said because my delivery date would be after the VAT increase we would have to pay 17.5%."
In terms of paperwork its a tad easier, I understand, for the dealer to count 15% up to 31st December and then 17.5% VAT after that rather than seperately account for boundary sales etc so I guess many did not mention to their buyers this money saving option. With a buyers market at present why bother we may ask? Customer care perhaps?
Then this option was not widely publicised so buyers did not mention it at the time of the purchase as part of the negotiations. Perhaps dealers were not aware?
Still, its worth digging out your paperwork and if not sure how you stand then just ask the dealer and if he has not heard of this concession by HMC&E ask him to check with them...you never know....
You need:-
1. VAT Invoice for full amount
2. Delivery must be stated to be within six months of the date of invoice
3. Dealer must agree to pay the 15% VAT to HMC&E by its next VAT payment date
None of the above you pay 17.5% on the balance

Hi Clare. We also ordered at show. We were contacted on 2nd Jan by our dealer to inform us of the week our caravan was being built and that it would be delivered to them in the next few days and be available for collection on the 12th Feb. We plan to collect it on the 19th Feb. Maybe some dealers like to wait till they take delivery before informing you but i know i appreciated knowing the dates as we could make plans.
Hi Claire. We collected our new GT60 last Saturday 30/1. It was an ex display manufactured in 2009, but we are the first registered owner as a 2010 and the insurers have accepted it as new for old. We saved £1200 for this. My reckoning is that if loads of people have twiddled with everything and nothings fallen off it must be a good one. I think if it is an ex demo they would be obliged to tell you.
We also paid 15% VAT; I assume the cutoff date was 1st Jan but we collected on 30th.
I can tell you it's worth the wait. It is fantastic. The handover took two hours, there was so much to show us, even though we are experienced caravanners, eveything has changed so much. Even the toilets got a few microchips to tell us when its full.
Hope it's not too much longer. I think if they said mId Feb it will be close. Bailey are so well organised, every van will have a production slot allocated when the dealer orders it. Good luck.

We got the CRIS document as soon as ours was delivered to the dealer even tho we weren't ready to pick it up for another month. The dealer called us to say it had arrived & we arranged to have the delivery walk-thru straight away then collect a month down the line. The floors & seats were all sealed in cellaphane (spelling?). Ours is a Coachman but assume all maufacturers do similar?
