Starting to Think about breakdown cover!
My towcar is covered by basic RAC cover and i have Normal insurance for the Caravan but no specific breakdown cover for the caravan.
Where do i stand at the moment if my car breaks down with the van attached?
In the event of an accident would i be covered by my car and caravan insurance to get me home if un drivable?
How am i covered for a trip to france this summer?
Check your policy but I think you will find RAC will deal with the caravan if it is the car that fails. If it is the caravan that fails they will charge you.

In my experience with the RAC, in a big pile of brown stuff. I would seriously consider changing to Red Pennant if you are going to France or Mayday if staying in the UK. Both through the Caravan Club. I always found the RAC about as much use as the pile of brown stuff they left me standing in.
The RAC will not assist in an accident either, so you will be left with the police cleaning the debris from the side of the road and sending a bill to the insurance company. Unfortunately, no one is going to be very helpful when it comes to getting you home or to your destination. Another big tick for Mayday and Red Pennant.
hi mjw !! check this link out !http://breakdown.insurancechoice.co.uk/compare.php. i have the silver cover for uk and you will see it covers the caravan and xtras £49 , or gold at £69 for european cover , you will be in for a nice , surprise.

I'm not sure a surprise is necessarily a good thing when it comes to insurance and the cheapest is not often a good thing either. Having said that, I changed from RAC to Mayday and saved a significant ammunt of money in doing it.

Don't know where you are getting your info from and I have no experience of using it but according to their conditions they will recover the caravan if the car breaks down.
The terms when I was a member were that the member would be billed in the event of an accident and would have to persue this from their insurance company. This is not the casae with Green Flag as they do not bill the member. I am unsure as to whether they bill the insurance company or not as I have not required their assistance after an accident. I do know of RAC members who have been involved in an accident and been asked for payment before they will even send any assistance.
As regard the problem with a trailer, I was told at the side of the road over the telephone that because I was towing a trailer, the RAC would not even discuss my breakdown further and I was left to fend for myself.

Ok - totally different situation to the question posed about cover for caravan. RAC do not cover trailers and horseboxes. They do cover caravans.

Do i need extra cover?
You will need extra cover for France.
What you should be looking for is...
1. A policy that will cover you to not only recover the caravan (and car) if the car breaks down or is involved in an accident, but that will also recover the caravan if the problem is with the caravan.
2. Then there is continuation of holiday, either with a replacement car and/or caravan or using hotels. Or "get you home" plus repatriation of both car and caravan.
3. And cover if the driver takes ill.
In this country you need at least no.1. Be aware also that there can be length limits on caravans for recovery.
I have been with Green flag for a few years now, but changed to green flag mayday through CC & not only saved 20 quid, but they will take your car & caravan to your booked destination and return it home at the end of your holiday if you cannot get your car fixed. i haven`t had to use it, luckily, But it sounds like a very good deal. I think i would like cover for 1 & 2 but would like cover for britain and Europe for a year. could anyone recommend a company that does this.
We have been with the RAC for about 20 years and during that time we have twice been towed home with caravan too - no questions asked! One of those times from Cornwall n to the Midlands. The kids were small then and enjoyed the ride in the truck - we were just embarassed to arrive home with car and caravan in tow!! LOL
With most cover, the problem is not what happens if the car breaks down, it's what happens if the caravan has a problem. Especially with a larger caravan.
I had 2 blow outs on the caravan in the space of 10 miles so obviously had no spare. I'm a member of the rac arrival via the camping and caravanning club, they picked the caravan up no problems on a tilting flatbed from the side of the M69,took me to coventry, made sure i could get the tyres fitted immediately, which fortunately i could, and left me to sort it out. If i couldn't have got the tyres they'd have taken me to the site i had booked in Newbury and taken the wheels to get the tyres fitted the next morning. You can't argue with that.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
