my neon light has gone on my remote control , yes yes i know its only a neon but put it in my pocket last night and it was off down the drive , cos i thought it was off
open it up and fit a new one. Are you sure it is a neon light and not an LED? Neons are usually used on 240v mains stuff. Battery powered stuff usually uses an LED. They are only a few pence. For the cost of a new handset, you could by an LED, soldering iron, solder and desolder pump and still have a lot of change. BTW LEDs are polarised and must be fitted the right way round. look for the little flat inline with one of the pins. Neons work on ac and therefore should be ok fitted either way round. Definately looks like an LED in the pictures online.
LEDs are pretty reliable Sparky, it may well be a 'dry joint' on the PCB, (the solder hasn't run properly and coated both surfaces) often caused when the components aren't properly clean, or you may see a small crack around one or more of the legs of the LED.
If thats the case, clean up the area and remake the solder joint, worth a look.
Have to agree with Pickled Onion about LED's actually. I was thinking this after I posted. The chances are as he says it's not the LED at fault. Could be a solder joint, especially if it has been dropped. It could also be another component at fault though. LED's are not usually connected atraight across the power as they cannot handle much voltage. They are normally connected in series with a resistor and often grounded through a transistor.
Worth opening it up and carefully checking all the solder joints are good and for the cost of a new LED if you are confident in replacing then may as well go ahead. If you have a multimeter, try meaasuring the voltage between the legs of the LED.If it is over about 0.6 volts then it looks like the LED is at fault. Any less than that then it is not going to be enough to light it up properly so the fault is going to be elsewhere. You may see a burnt resistor somewhere on the board though near the LED. This would be the most likely culprit.
You could try a tv / radio repair shop. The circuitry is pretty straightforward and they should be able to fix it.
I'd ask when was the battery last changed before I started chasing electrons and possibly burnig myself on a hot soldering iron and invalidating the warranty :)
. . . and then I actually read the original post with me glasses on!! Senior moment! The Enduro is guaranteed for ages may be worth taking the remote to the dealer who sold you it you never know they may replace it free of charge.
I'd disengage it and switch off the master switch before going back in the house if I were you!
its ok it was led found this company that does remote controls , picked it up this morning returned this afternoon led back working now any one wants to use him let me know or look his web page up Cape Electronics <enquiries at capeelectronics.co.uk>
Eh by gum LDKO I remember when they were Radio Spares and the catalogues were big thick paper things. Now they are just plain RS and its all done online.
It does take me back LDKO - I can also remember wondering why the Central Stores Vocab (civil service) didn't just use the Radio Spares part numbers instead of maintaining a whole list all their own because if you wanted anything you had to get the RS number to get the damn thing anyway!
