We have a 6 birth (single axle) with a triple bunk and the baby goes on the bottom bunk which is effectively a mattress on the floor. We put a piece of plastic mesh slotted in between the bunk ladder and dinette seat to keep him from rolling of the mattress. I'd not mind if he did roll out as there's no height to fall but I'm concerned about what might land on him from the two girls' bunks above!
We're collecting our new triple bunk next week so am interested in the above advice from avctaylor: can you describe the mesh you use, where you bought it and how it is attached? Many thanks!
Snugglebabe, the purchase of our new caravan was to improve the sleeping situation for our little one. We chose the triple bunk layout for many reasons but one of them certainly was the versatility it offered at night time to ensure safe sleeping for all ages, as avctaylor's reply seems to confim!
we've got a graco compact travel cot that fits perfectly in between the front seats also perfect for when theyre a little older doubles up as a playpen in the awning

It's just a sheet of green plastic plant support mesh from a garden centre (a rigid sheet rather than the softer rollable stuff) and slots in.
We've got the GT60 540/6 so different triple bunk layouts might be slightly different, but for us the sheet of mesh isn't quite as long as the bunk (doesn't need to be because of the bench etc).
*the bottom edge of the mesh rests on the floor, right against the bottom bunk framework.
*the left edge of the mesh fits behind the ladder.
*the right edge of the mesh fits behind the end of the long dinette bench
*the top edge, we shaped so that the centre of the top edge is like a moon shape (we cut it - it just came as a rectangle from the garden centre!). This means that the top edge can rest on the outside edge of the bottom of the middle bunk (so the mesh can't fall in).
It sounds more complicated than it is! Unfortunately I don't have photos of it as that would be easier to explain but hope this helps enough.
hi, just to let you know i have seen a caravan bedguard for small babies and children which fixes onto the matress and to the top of the other bunk, im sorry but i dont know where they sell them but i have seen them with caravans maybe contacting the people who made your caravan or trying to get one 2nd hand. i thought they were a really good idea
thanks for all the ideas everyone! there seem to be quite a few ways around it. our toddler is quite flexible- she is a bed already so some sort of guard to stop her falling out would do. As for the next baby, I would be happy to improvise to start with by squeezing a moses basket in or cosleeping (safely) but I really like the idea of making a cot out of one of the bunks by putting a side on it. I think it is more relaxing if there is somewhere for everyone to sleep that is tailored for them- in an ideal world anyway. I guess we need to see what we can afford. I feel too sick now to caravan shop so I think I may park it for a while!

More to come....
Hi, better late than never with a reply!. What we do, its not for everyone is our double bed in the van is massive, its like a super king size, so what we do is put our eldest on the top bunk, leave the bottom empty, then pop our baby in her Moses basket next to us , against the wall( so I end up in the middle so to speak). I'm then not worried that She will fall out or she will get cold & as the paranoid mummy I am I can check on her to see if she's OK or warm enough. As what to do when your baby gets bigger, you can decide for yourself what works for you the older your baby gets, we have got a travel bed guard ( most vans have a side bed guard only its ply wood, but if you add your own as well on the bottom bunk you will be fine)Hope this helps or adds a new twist on your idea xxx
We migrated from a tent to a caravan some years ago - camping is great but at the end of the day your backside is on the floor and thats a sure recipe for being cold in this country!!
With regards to the sleeping arrangements, use a moses basket to start with when they are babies them move to top and tailing them on a bunk - we had a blue mesh type Tomy bed guard which fitted the bunk too. Kids have been in caravans for eons - I've got a picture somewhere of me on the back lower bunk of my parents Thompson - the year is 1968, I'm 10 weeks old and we're in San Sebastrian Spain!!
Don't worry about it anyway, kids are tough - my older sister fell out of the top bunk when she was about 10, still in her sleeping bag - she never even woke up!!

Hope she wasn't knocked unconscious! We lost our daughter once at night in a trailer tent. We slept on the double the one side, she slept on the double the other side. We suddenly heard a cry and jumped to the rescue - unzipped her side and couldn't see her at all, but could hear her. She'd rolled over towards the edge of the bed base, towards the canvas, and slipped off the edge. She was slung in a sort of hammock of material, cocooned underneath the bed base, suspended in mid-air. Cries from us of 'Ruth, where are you?' and answers from her of 'I'm here!' were of little help. In the end when we had realised what had happened, we climbed underneath the wooded bed board, and with some effort on my behalf, shoved her back in the same general direction from whence she came. Happy days!
The van we just got rid of was an elddis ashington 4 berth, with L shaped lounge that a travel cot fitted perfectly in. When our now 2 1/2 year old was a baby we made our own bed guard for the bottom bunk. Then she was in the travel cot. We changed the van just before christmas to a bailey with a fixed fed for us, and we make the lounge at the front into the double at night for the kids to sleep in. They sleep one each side, but as its made into a double, if they roll around there is no worry about them falling out. They each have their own duvet and sleeping bags. This set up will be fine until our 8 year old starts to overhand the 5' 4'' bed length.
