Its a bit of a pain having to remove towing mirrors when touring. Is there any regulation that allows or disallows using extended mirrors while not towing. I can pull the mirrors right in so they are not much of an extension.

They have to be removed if you are not towing. What the law actually prescribes is that cars have to have mirrors which must not extend more than a certain length beyond the widest part of the car. So if you have the towing mirrors on you exceed the maximum length for mirrors. (Regulation 33 of the Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 (as amended))
Anyway, taking off the mirrors gives you something to do whilst waiting for the wife to get ready.

Blimey, do you have a wife that can get ready in 2 minutes? Where did you find her? She must be 1 in a million, best keep a firm grip on her and don't let her get away.
I am able to remove the mirror arms and leave the fixing brackets with there elastic straps on, of which there two on each side. I find this to be fine for short breaks. i remove them for a long weekend However, there is no restricted vision to either of the "vehicles" mirrors.
I estimate it takes me two minutes each side to fit my mirrors, and ten minutes of "No left a bit no down" when my girlfriend is adjusting the passengers side towing mirror.

No mate. Changing towing mirrors is just of hundreds of jobs I find to do whilst I wait. Usually change the oil in the car and swop all the wheels round as well!!

You do have to remove them. Mine fit on an arm that clips on the main mirror, so if you always put it on in the same place, you don't have to adjust them at all. We fit both mirrors in two minutes, and take them off in ablut half a minute.
