We are off to sunny Lyme Regis tomorrow and was wondering which you thought would be the best exit from the M5 for us to take, we are coming down from Cheshire so the M6 / M5 is the route we will take. I have a satnav but as we all know some of the roads it takes you on are not great for a caravan. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Cant remember which junction it is but we went through Axminster rather than Lyme Regis itself, as you will never get your caravan through Lyme Regis town centre! Enjoy your trip!
I would probably come down to Junction 29 at Exeter and then head East on the A30 to Honiton, turning off onto the A35 which will take you to Lyme Regis. The A 30 is all dual carriageway and then the A35 is OK. It's a bit up and down and curvy in some places but there are some areas of dual carriageway along the road.
You could exit at Junction 28 for Cullompton and come down the A373 to Honiton but that road is very windy and very narrow in places so passing can sometimes be difficult if you meet a tractor or milk lorry.

Take the junction at Taunton J25 then A358, turn right onto the A303 then take the A358 to Chard and Axminster. From Axminster you have a choice, if you are going to the East of Lyme I would take the A358 towards Charmouth and then approach Lyme on the A3052 but whatever you do I would never try to tow through Lyme. If you are going to the East of Charmouth I would take the A358 from Axminster towards Seaton and then turn left onto the A3052 for Lyme. This is 30 miles from taunton and easy
Going to Exeter and then back along the A303 is a long way out of your way ( this way is 65miles from taunton ) and I have towed over every one of the roads I suggested with no problems whatsoever. You could also take J28 and the A378 towards Honiton but that one has a relatively narrow and steep hill as it gets close to the A303, still passable towing but not recomended.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Speaking as a local come off at Taunton junct 25 and follow a358 to ilminster then chard and on to axminster. at Axminster take a left A35 towards Lyme.
Your first right turn to Lyme will be the b3165 but this is not a good road for a caravan. The next turn would be the a3052 which is better towards lyme but lyme itself really isn't good for caravans.
Where in Lyme do you want to go to?
Any further down M5 than Taunton is a waste of time really.
Sorry to hijack the thread but what is the b3157 like between Bridport, through Abbotsbury to Weymouth. We are staying at East Fleet Farm and i am trying not to go through Weymouth if i can help it.

Its ok - 2 lane all the way. Not the widest but I would take my caravan that way. Its a bit of a switch back and plenty of corners. It's a favourite biker's road. They try to beat the best time along it when its quiet.
Why do you want to avoid Weymouth? you may have a bit of traffic into weymouth from dorchester but there is a ring road that will take you round for East Fleet farm. That said there are road works from Dorchester for the olympics preparation and not sure of the consequences from that.
Out of interest I have spoken to East fleet farm for the sailing olympics fortnight. They are taking provisional bookings and assure me they will not be premium pricing

Hi, I know Weymouth quite well as I have family there, and my step father was Weymouth born and bred. Weymouth itself isn't too bad, the main bottle neck for me is the traffic lights at Upwey where I always seem to que for ages, especially at peak holiday times.
Then I would say don't go to Lyme Regis but from axminster follow the site directions to Seaton:-
"From M5 junction 25 (Taunton) take the A358 to Axminster. From Axminster continue on the A358 towards Seaton. Turn left at the A3052 sign posted Rousdon and the site entrance is on the left a few yards after Rousdon Garage."
And this would be the quickest route using decent roads. Probably not the route your satnav would take you.
