Was wondering if you kind folk's could help me with a wee problem i'm having. When i hook up the caravan to the mains sometimes the battery charger reads 13.8 volts as normal and other times it reads anything from 9volts upwards.

When i disconnect the 12vdc connector coming from the charger and test it on its own it reads 13.8v, plug it back in to the connector going to the fusebox it can read from 9v to 13.8v.

At first i thought there must be something in the caravan draining the battery so i pulled all the fuses and tested the charger again. 13.8v

The battery has been charging fine for the last 2 days, but tonight its reading 11 volts. I've swapped the leisure battery for a car battery and again it charges for a while but then the voltage starts to vary again.

I'm pretty sure its the charger thats at fault, the only thing throwing me is that everytime i test the charger on its own it always puts out 13.8v.

Any ideas anyone

Thanks in advance

Gary

When you test it on its own it is off load. If its output varies when on load it sounds as if its gulched to me.

Just to let you all know that it was actually the battery that was at fault this time.

At least i'll know the next time it happens!!

As I understand it, the diagnosis method under such situations is:

Does the battery hold a charge if charged and left for a few days? If not, it's shot. If so, look elsewhere for your fault.

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.
