we have just bought a 2009 Lunar zenith it comes with a 13am socket for the electrics ( lights and indicaters) the car is a santa fe ad only has a twin 7in socket, We had to buy a Adapter to fit the electrics for towing cost us £30 has anyone got one of these have not seen one around. Have we been coned.
they do seem to range from about £9 upwards for the basic model, which does lights only, for £30 i would want one that does the fridge, battery and reverse lights.
hi Mike yes it does the fridge, Lights etc...but it is a big object to be dangling when touring...we thought of a bungir lead to tie down, would you advise this.
You can buy them everywhere, I bought ours in Attwoolls camping centre in gloucester, they seem to do pretty much everything there & offer a mail order service. I've since seen them on Ebay at all sorts of different prices.
When you fit it, make sure you twist the cable & tie the adaptor to your hitch, I use a strong cable tie for this but I wonder if that's the best thing to use.
After having mine unwind & drop to the road surface & rub almost right through on our way home from Cornwall recently, I'll be useing a length of elastic rope on it in future.
You need to try to fix it up with bungee or a large cable tie might do a better job to prevent it dragging on the road. A much better idea would be to fit your car with a 13pin socket. The 2 existing 7 core cables can be fed into one 13pin socket to replace your twin 7pin sockets. If you can't diy, a towbar fitter would do it for an hours labour.
£30 is average price for twin adaptor. If you fit your car with a 13pin socket & you also tow a trailer with 7pin plug you can get a neat single adaptor cost about £10.
We changed the car to 13pin electrics. We were only charged about £25 to change so better and neater than buying an adaptor and no extra wire to contend with. We also got the adaptor to convert the cars 13pin to 7 pin to tow our old caravan to the dealers.
We changed to a new caravan and they gave us the adapter with it. It does both lights and electrics but I think I'm going to get the car changed to the same as the caravan, it seems easier so there'll be no split in connections.
We had a 12S/N? middle pin melt down so we got the tow bar chappy out and he changed the two plugs on the car to one 13 Pin socket and the same on the caravan. All for £45. Took a couple of hours on the drive. Great job. No problems since.
I took delivery of a new van in February which had the new 13 pin socket, I also bought the adapter at the same time. After 2 months I couldnt be bothered with it and have changed my car electrics over to accomodate the 13 pin socket. Should have done that at the beginning. Guess my adapter will appear on E-Bay shortly.
I'm just about to change the socket on my car in preparation for the collection of my new Olympus 546 on Friday (woohoo!!)
I curently don't have a 12s socket fitted to the car so will be wiring all of the supplimentary connections from scratch. Can anybody confirm that it's ok to connect the permenant live directly to the battery as long as it's fused?
Basically need to know there will be a charging relay built in to the caravan so that I don't connect the car and van battery directly and blow the fuse (or worse!)
We have now changed the socket. We did use one with wraps holding it up, but its heavy and long, and we ended up
damaging one because we didnt secure it well enough!
