Looks like Hobby's etc are legal now. Below is a quote from the trailer assn website
Following consultation the DfT have announced the removal of the 2.3 metre width limit for light trailers towed behind a vehicle with Maximum Authorised Mass less than 3500 kg ie most cars and 4x4's. The width limit for light trailers (i.e. categories O1 and O2) up to 3500 kg MAM is now 2.55 metres irrespective of the towing vehicle, be it car, 4x4 or qualifying commercial vehicle.. This brings the UK into line with the rest of Europe. In the past the limit was 2.3 metres unless the towing vehicle was a qualifying commercial vehicle with MAM over 3500 kg
I reckon there was more than one reason behind this, previously these caravans were exempt from VAT as they were classed as semi residential, of course now it's legal to tow one behind a standard vehicle and used as a standard, all be it wider caravan it now attracts the dreaded VAT.
------------- here today , where tomorrow?
yet another full timer,
Bit of an older thread on this issue some time back. Magazines are full of it but not one has mentioned that the length restriction for towing with your normal family car has not altered. Thus the larger Hobbys cannot be legally towed with that kind of motor.

It just brings us into line with the rest of Europe. Plenty of German built caravans available 2.4 & 2.5mtres width that are under the 7mtres max allowed body length.
No just the usual VAT and if you want one hurry before VAT goes up in a week or two!!!!!!!!!!

If one had got in straight away then VAT could have been avoided completely. I am sure there are a few lucky people who saved themselves a few thousand.
