I forced myself to tow cos if hubby is taken ill I would have to get us back from wherever we were. Trouble is he can't read a map or give directions, so I can only tow if I know the way!
I go away with my friends every year, and last year we got diverted into Mansfield on the way home from Sherwood Forest, with the van on the back and all the kids in the car. Can't say I enjoyed it but I did feel good when I eventually got home.
Still can't reverse into a pitch so we are buying a motor mover this year to make life easier, but roads are no problem.
I've booked myself another little hol in a couple of weeks and I'm gonna tow myself so will let you all know how I get on. Problem is I might get on so well that my little breaks on my own with the dog will become a little too often. Hee hee x We live just minutes from Clumber Park so will take it there first just to practice.
As I have to work most weekends my wife also takes the caravan to a site and sets it up, usually on a friday afternoon. My job is pick the children up from school and take them to the site, not forgetting of course to ring her when we are 10 minutes away to tell her to put the kettle on! I then spend a couple of hours with them before travelling home to go to work. She is a very confident driver and has been caravanning much longer than me and so she knows what she is doing, if she wasn't able to set the van up we would be unable to have many holidays so it works well for us.
I love towing ours, a Kia Sorento, with a Coachman, and i am only 5ft 2, and seven and a half stone. We did have an American Motorhome before the caravan which was a 7.4 petrol awesome beast of a machine,,,,,couldnt pass a petrol station though !!! and guess what my day to day car is,,,,,,,,my beautiful Mini Cooper,,,,,one extreme to the other !!!

I remember last year up at forfar a woman arrived with her O/H and as she was towing a twin axle, I thought id sit and watch the fun for a while having a laugh at her reversing into her pitch a zillion times before going over to offer a hand.
imagine my utter disbelief when she manouvered the caravan perfectly into the pitch first time and with only a couple of hand signals from her man.
we got chatting and it turned out she spent most of her days on a farm reversing tractors with trailers attached so i learned a lesson that day.
------------- Who needs travel agents,we have our static
I am 74 this year and do all the towing. My OH doesn't drive. But I admit that when we arrive on site, I do like him to unhitch and lower the legs. We do have a motor mover which is useful. I have severe arthritis and don't think I could cope on my own. (I used to though when he worked shifts, and I would collect the kids from school and we would be off. He would follow later on his motor bike !!)

The wife will only tow after sinking 8 pints of stella no more no less. She says it gives her confidence but i think she just uses it as an excuse to get mullered.
My OH tows everywhere at the moment but I am going on the CC towing course next month so I can share the load. Must say I'm quite nervous about the whole idea of towing as I've never towed anything in my life. It's good for the confidence to hear about other ladies that tow and make such a success of it. Well done girls
I've towed ours for 15 years after a couple of outings its easy as long as you don't get complacent, always expect the unexpected like idiots who think you can slam your brakes on because 'it's a caravan and I'm not getting stuck behind it'.

I'm a single lady ( though not quite 60 ) so have to tow if I want to get anywhere. I've just come back from Cornwall ( fabulous ) and drove from Newcastle to Crantock solo ( with 4 legged friend ). I really do think it's just a case of confidence not just in your driving skills but in your outfit. I check the van religiously, pack like a jigsaw over the axle and stick to the limits. I take pride in the fact that I can reverse, set up etc.on my own, though having a Freedom helps and people are usually very helpful if you get stuck .Saying that it's a b****r to reverse, having a short wheel base it just does it's own thing ! The only thing about being on your own is that sometimes when you're reversing, hitching up etc. you feel like the cabaret, everyone watching to see if you can manage. After one difficult maneovre everyone actually clapped !
