Greetings Again,

Is it possible to get your entitlements back by having a medical after you have had them taken away by sending in your Licence on reaching 70yrs.

A point to note is, although the renewal form may say your existing photo is O.K. and you dont need to send a new one, if your existing photo is 10 years old before the expiry of your renewed 3year post 70 one they only date your license up to the photo expiry date,so it pays to send a new photo.

Hi Wizard,

        This restriction does not apply to all mni-bus driving. The regs are a bit confusing but basically the rules do not apply to cat B drivers under 70 driving mini-buses under certain size/weight in a voluntary capacity, ie scout groups, junior football teams or, as in my case a disabled swimming group. At 70 years of age the medical rules apply as per the weight restrictions for towing. The regs are confusing though, I can, at the moment, drive a combination up to 8250kg but not a mini-bus with more than 15 (I think) seats and a steam driven vehicle of any weight!

I think the confusion is that the DVLA leave it up to you to recognise that you need a different form and a medical report post-70 if you want to retain any C or D class on your licence. If you just apply using the "normal" form these sections are removed:

Keeping the vehicle categories C1 and D1

I only have a licence for 3 years anyway.  I'm a diabetic on insulin, and 3 years is the maximum the DVLC will let me have a licence for.  They've just renewed it for another 3 years once they'd had confirmation from my GP that I haven't had any hypos during the last 3 years.  Although how he'd know I'm not entirely sure!!

if you read it properly b+e allows a vehicle up to 3,500kg pulling any weight trailer so long as you dont break the train weight of the towing vehicle.

with the right vehicle you can pull much more than a c1+e .. thats why many older folk go for fifth wheel caravans. you can voluntary down plate vehiclesfrom above 3,500kg to 3,500kg laden.

use an iveco chassis cab it can pull 8,700kg.

use a down plated mitsubishi like mine it can pull 9,600kg. both those weights are for vehicle and trailer.

both these can be driven on a b+e licence . have a word with vosa or dvla if you dont believe me. i know it doesnt make sesnse but it is correct. cheers alan.
