Hi,
Having over the years pulled away from our pitch with steadies down, rooflights and windows open, cupboard doors not secure and on one memorable occasion with the caravan not properly secured to the car leading to it coming off the ball hitch we have learnt the hard way to carry out very simple basic checks and for this use the following list/rules:
DO NOT RELY SOLELY ON YOUR MEMORY - CHECK against list.
One person checks inside.
One person checks outside.
Inside:
Moving from furthermost point in caravan to the door:
Rooflights shut & secure
Windows shut and secure
Cupboard, fridge, cooker & wardrobe doors shut and secure
TV secure and aerial/dish down
Shower and bathroom doors shut & secure
Sink and hob covers down
Fridge switch to car battery function
Any loose items put away
Outside:
Walk around caravan checking windows and locker doors closed & secure
Turn gas off in locker
Empty toilet, waste water containers at disposal points.
Drain drinking water containers
Disconnect elec cable at EHU first then at caravan
Raise all 4 steadies (get wife out of caravan first)
Hitch up caravan to car & check correctly fastened on tow ball.(Try lifting caravan off ball with jockey wheel)
Secure brake cable to car hitch
Undo Mover if you have one and store tool in caravan
Store steps in caravan
Lock door
Take a final walk around car and caravan and check all lights and indicators are working(wife to operate in car)

This works for us
David

Careful if you have a Alko hitch lock with a ball that fits into the hitch - in other words, make sure you remove the ball.  The trouble is that with the removeable ball in the hitch, the button that tells you that the hitch is secure comes up as being 'green'.  If you forget to remove the ball and then try and hitch up the hitch will be balancing on the tow ball, but the button tells you that the van is securely hitch.  When you pull away, the hitch ends up on the floor and you will in all probability break the override brake cable.  You also risk damaging the hitch.  Then you have the problem of lifting up the hitch of the van while loosening, dropping and tightening up the jockey wheel.  Of course, I am speaking from experience here.  Mind you, the good thing is, when you have done this once, you will never do it again.

I don't usually have the problem with the motor mover, Phil.  We have to put ours on manually which means we have a brace thing that does it.  I normally leave it attached when we are using the motor mover to remind me that the mover is engaged, and so it's fairly obvious that you need to disengage and remove the handle before moving off.

Better than my plan of leaving it on the floor and on a last look round wonder I left it on the floor!!!!!

My favourite is to try and move the van with the mover and forget to take the handbrake off, fortuneately no damage done so far.
